About the Author
Mike Harrity earned a Master of Science in Education/Sport Management degree and a Bachelor of Science in Journalism/News Editorial from The University of Kansas (KU). After serving seven years in the athletics department at his alma mater, Harrity is now a Senior Associate Athletics Director at the University of Notre Dame. His career has helped him become well-connected with some of the top athletes, coaches and administrators in the world of sports. While a journalism major at KU, Harrity wrote national award-winning articles on college and professional athletics and was a recipient of the prestigious NCAA Foundation Sports Journalism Scholarship. His many stories have been published in The Kansas City Star and the San Jose Mercury News and carried by the Associated Press. Harrity lives in South Bend, IN with his wife, Dr. Megan Brent Harrity, who formerly served as the KU athletic department's Counseling and Sport Psychologist, and their daughter, Grace Estelle.

A fresh perspective

As a former Division 1 athlete I experienced a myriad of coaching styles during my college career. I think what Mike has done here is to give a different view of how to achieve success in any position of leadership that differs from the Bear Bryant way of tearing people down. This isn't a book about Xs and Os on the court or field. Instead it's about empowering your athletes or subordinates to achieve at their full potential. The best game plan won't matter without execution. I found this book to be not only informative but also inspiring. I've bought copies for many friends and will continue to recommend it based on the high quality interviews and journalistic coverage.

Coaching Wisdom

Mike Harrity did an unbelievable job digging up items that people in everyday life can take from this book. This is not your normal leadership/coaching book. This is a book that brings the small items of being successful to life with real in depth stories from successful people. It shows the effort, sacrifice and time given to build a great foundation for life, your company or team. So many of the items Mike touches on are often forgot in today's world. If you want to be successful and have a great understanding of what it takes, this is a must read!

Among the best leadership books on coaches

I really enjoyed Coaching Wisdom by Mike Harrity. It is a beautiful book and very well-written, jam packed with incredible inspiration and information on leadership and life. The author does an excellent job blending his own personal insights and experience while paying homage to the great coaches in the book such as John Wooden, Brad Stevens, Lou Holtz, Tom Osborne, and many others. I especially enjoyed the information on Brad Stevens since that has been harder to find in other coaching leadership books.
Each coach is featured throughout the book in several "Profiles," exceptional tributes to the principles and values the coaches live by and teach their players. I found myself highlighting these like crazy and have already shared Brad Stevens' "The Culture of We" with my students.
There are many books that have been written featuring a compilation of coaches, but Harrity's book is among the best. If you love sports and are passionate about leadership and want to find out exactly how and why these coaches are the best of the best, pick up Coaching Wisdom.
