Finally a microbiology textbook for a biology major that is written in a fresh new way!

I am using this textbook in my majors microbiology course this semester. It is an amazing book that has all the details that I need for my students but is not written in a dry manner. It uses the pedagogy that is so commonly found in non-majors books to help the student majoring in biology / microbiology see the connections between topics, the research behind the science, and applications to their life in the real world. The artwork is amazing and helps the students better visualize the structures and functions they need to learn. The WileyPlus homework that is associated with the textbook is a great way to help students practice what they are learning in class and be better prepared for exams. I am so happy that this book came to market as there was not much of a choice out there for a quality major microbiology textbook. All the other major microbiology textbooks follow the same theme of too much information in too much detail with very little real life application and connections. Finally, we have a microbiology textbook written by someone that not only understands the research behind the content, but can teach it as well!

The book is as described and there is nothing wrong with the book. I purchased this for a class that I am taking, and all the information in the book is wonderful. It is not too detailed though so I would only recommend this textbook for people taking introduction to microbiology courses.

Be flexible

As the owner of a small business, I am often faced with leadership issues. It is important to constantly learn more and more about how to be a more effective leader.... And this book really lends a hand in helping do just that. Specifically for me, learning to delegate more is a definite need in this book has helped me see how to do so more effectively. Conflict resolution, namely between what I'm thinking and what I'm doing, is also an area where this book was effective. If you are running a small business or if you are even self-employed and have to delegate to people across the Internet, this is a must-have book.

Unfortunately this doesn't provide most of us with any guidance on how to be a better leader and manager

In my work, I often hear that "leaders are born", and you're out of luck if you don't get the gene. Unfortunately this doesn't provide most of us with any guidance on how to be a better leader and manager. The Flexible leader provides a practical roadmap to the kinds of behaviors that make leaders successful. This isn't an psychological look at the personality or charisma of great leaders, it's about what successful leaders do, say, and how they manage. This book is empowering for those of us trying to learn how to be better leaders and managers.Great read.

First, let me say I was skeptical about this book. Leadership books in general seem to be weighted in only one area and direction and it is usually based on the author's own leadership style. Because of that, this book was refreshing.

Zain Caldwell has effectively broken down the various leadership styles, defining them in such a way that it was easy to identify the style of many of my team members almost immediately. Through the information, chapter by chapter, I began to understand how to better utilize each unique style to get the maximum productivity out of an entire team instead of focusing on just one style and strength.

It is structured so that you can dig in but not get overburdened with information. Each chapter is clearly laid out, well written, and consistently succinct.

This is a great read for anyone in or striving for a leadership position. I have a feeling I will be using this book as a reference time and time again.

Understandable but complex - for a complex subject

I used this book for an undergrad Architecture course. I had a great teacher, and we only looked at certain sections in the book. There is an awful lot to cover in a single semester.

The book is written for students with very little formal electronics knowledge, but you do need to know some basic logic and hardware concepts. It is based on the i86 architecture, making generalizations where possible. If you have a strong background, or want to learn very detailed concepts - then there are better choices. Sometimes this book over-simplifies concepts to reach its intended audience.

I later found the book useful as a reference tool in a graduate architecture class. Especially the sections on memory - cache, virutal, pagefiles, etc.. Even though my grad class was on the MiPS architecture, the concepts are the same.

Overall, this was a decent text for an undergraduate course.

As other reviewers, (good and bad) have noted - when you are learning, you should always use additional references. Don't depend on this book alone to teach you.

Part of what makes this text so difficult to understand is the author's inability to use consistent terms while trying to explain material. In the first chapter, a simple And gate is referred to as 'AND', 'x^y', 'x.y', 'xy', '()()', and 'and'. All true, but used interchangeably while trying to explain makes the concepts incredibly difficult to decipher, particularly when variations for representing other boolean concepts are added to the fray.
The best part of the book, as far as I can tell, is that the key terms are in bold so I know what to plug into Google to try and figure out what it is.

A failure for purely academic reasons

The first chapter is the most important in the book. And yet it is riddled with poor grammar, truth table errors, no answers to questions in the back of book etc. I don't understand how someone who understands the subject can convey so little meaningful information. Actually I do understand, and this book's academic blasphemy should be burnt black as ruined toast. Money down the drain, as Ricky Ricardo "splained" things to Lucy at a much higher level. This book leaves me bitter if you hadn't noticed.
