Animals and World Religions, by Lisa Kemmerer

Despite increasing public attention to animal suffering, little seems to have changed: Human beings continue to exploit billions of animals in factory farms, medical laboratories, and elsewhere. In this wide-ranging and perceptive study, Lisa Kemmerer shows how spiritual writings and teachings in seven major religious traditions can help people to consider their ethical obligations toward other creatures.

Dr. Kemmerer examines the role of nonhuman animals in scripture and myth, in the lives of religious exemplars, and by drawing on foundational philosophical and moral teachings. She begins with a study of indigenous traditions around the world, then focuses on the religions of India (Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain) and China (Daoism and Confucianism), and finally, religions of the Middle East (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). At the end of each chapter, Kemmerer explores the inspiring lives and work of contemporary animal advocates who are motivated by a personal religious commitment.

Animals and World Religions demonstrates that rethinking how we treat nonhuman animals is essential for anyone claiming one of the world's great religions.

Review

"[An] impressive book...The publication of this book is an outstanding achievement."--Animal Spirit

"[A] compelling book....This thought-provoking book should be required reading for people who say that they are religious but seem to think that they need not take animals into consideration."--PETA Prime Book Club

"This is a beautifully written and passionate example of philosophical activism that is humble enough to take ancient wisdom seriously in the service of very modern questions." --Philosophy in Review

"Academically erudite and discerning...Kemmerer's new book is an eloquent contribution to what has always been a critical issue for our long-term survival and wellbeing." --New Lotus

"Kemmerer's book is useful for those who wish to review folkloric similarities that are part of the foundational texts of world religions, for example 'morality tales' of wise, talking animals responding to natural crises or human-derived cruelties. The narrative of the Buddha-parrot saving a forest of animals is particularly delightful." --Religion

"Kemmerer demonstrates many times over that the core, the fundamental teachings of the religions of the world are 'radically friendly' to other-than-human animals, demanding respect, justice, and compassion. With the publication of her book, the future of religion-and-animal-studies will be forever changed-for the better."
---Tom Regan author, The Case for Animal Rights

"Focuses on Hinduism, Buddhism, and jainism in India, Daoism and Confucianism in China, and the three Abrahamic faiths with origins in the Middle East."--The Chronicle Review

"Kemmerer has provided us with a real moral service."--Spirituality & Practice

"This is an important text...I am grateful to Kemmerer for writing this book. I am grateful for the fact that it is in the world for people to read. But perhaps mostly, I am grateful that it is a reminder that religious teachings of love and compassion for anymals are meant to be practiced. Practice requires action, and Animals and World Religions explores how, from each corner of the world, there is a call to action for anymals."--Our Hen House

"The genius of this book is that it is so appropriately structured, both chronologically and topically... This book is a unifying work sublime in its interest and purpose, reflecting the divinity that is infused in the myriad of creatures whose lives invite respect, love, and compassion in every human individual and tradition." --Between the Species

Just an awesome book!!!!
By Howard G. Fass
This book is a huge gigantic step in getting people to be more awake and mindful within their religious practice with regards to total compassion for all living sentient beings and the environment. Whatever that particular faith amongst the world's major traditions may be, Christian, Buddhist, Islam etc, all call upon the practicioner (follower) to be compassionate and act in such a way that adds more love and reduces suffering in the world.

A must read for anyone who professes to have a spiritual or religious component to their lives or even for the non-religious person who wonders what the rest of the world's religions have written about how humans ought interact with the other animals who call this planet their home.

I have never had a book I underlined more and will most certainly use this handy work as I seek to get people to think about their own faith and the food they eat. This book is about getting people to make the necessary and very logical and practical connections which exist in all world religions regarding a virtuous spiritual path.

Here are a few quotes from within this great book:

"Buddhist philosphy teaches that, just as surely as one who throws dirt into the wind will have dust in their eyes, a flesh eater piles up negative karma"

"Buddhist moral ideals require practicioners to make choices that reduce suffering; an enlightened Buddhist is one who "does not kill or cause others to kill. The bodhisattva, desirous of cultivating the virtue of love, should not eat meat, lest he or she cause terror to living beings"

(regarding animals and not eating meat): "cruelty is not only a denial of the animal's nature but a betrayal of our own"

"Either the pain of other creatures has a moral value or it does not have a moral value. Either there is a God or there isn't. Either (God) cares about animals or (God) doesn't. Either we have duties of kindess or we do not. Either human love is expansive or it is not Christian love. Christianity entails a vision of limitless love."

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy" Matt 5:7

"Christian traditions offer a morality that is rooted in love and service, which is perhaps more easily exemplified through day-to-day sharing. When diety preferences (like eating meat) are more important than the well-being of others, people fail grievously in their obligation to fulfill Jesus' message of mercy, peace and love."

"For the fate of humans and the fate of animals is the same. As one dies, so does the other. They have the same breath, and humans have no advantage over the animal; for all is meaningless. All go to one place; all come from dust and all return to dust. Who knows if the spirit of humans goes upward and the spirit of the animal goes downward to the earth." ECCLES 3:19-21

The list of great quotes goes on and on... but I think you get the idea.

The amazing thing here is how all major world religions actually on a fundamental level uphold a life-style that does not exploit and visit suffering upon animals for food, milk etc... which causes massive suffering on the scale of many many billions each and every year. In fact the average American directly or indirectly through diety habits is responsible for the deaths of something like 200 animals each and every year. Just think if we stopped all this suffering and chose a better healthier diet that did not rely on animal exploitation in any form. It would be a total win-win. Human health and well-being would be greatly improved physically and spiritualy. The environment would be improved; factory farming in the US consumes more grain than humans and produces far more waste (not treated) than humans.

Thank you Lisa Kemmerer for this wonderful effort here. I have learned a great deal and am better for having purchased this book!!!

I loved this quote I found in this book as well by Gandhi: "A government that is evil has no room for good men and women except in its prisons" This quote made me think of China's CCP regime and its jailed nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo amongst many others etc...

Remarkably accessible scholarship
By P. Strindlund
If you're looking for a book about views on animals in a specific religion (e.g. Christianity or Buddhism) there are several books to choose from, but if you want to read about animals in ALL the major religions, Kemmerer's work is THE book to read. Massive research has gone into Animals and World Religions--being an author on the topic of animal ethics, I can appreciate the amount of work that this volume required. Despite being a monumental research effort, Kemmerer's writing is non-technical--an easy and enjoyable read, riddled with interesting stories and anecdotes. Animals and World Religions is an impressive piece of remarkably accessible scholarship.

Religious Perspectives on Animal Welfare: A Great Exposition
By Nadeem Haque
This book is excellent from a number of perspectives: Firstly, the author has gone to great lengths to actually use the various scriptures of the World Religions and the writings and sayings of their proponents and connects the principles of each of the belief systems/religions with respect to non-human animals or as the author creatively puts it: 'anymals'. The topic of the book and approach have a number of benefits: It is shown by Kemmerer that at the core, each of these religions is expressing the same view in terms of the sacredness of creation and how we as humans ought to recognize and relate to it. The book makes one curious to learn more about each of these religions and engage in further comparative analysis. It also clears up misconceptions 'believers' have about each others religions that can lead to co-operation rather than conflict and working towards a common cause (such as animal protection). The chapter on Islam is very extensive and thorough, for example, and highlights the vast concern for 'anymals' in Islam, not even known to many Muslims themselves!

Many of the followers of these religions have no doubt strayed from their respective founders' belief structures. There are aspects of current 'malpractices' in the name of religion that do indeed sadly exist. However, I think that the author has wisely left these out of discussion and focused on the positive aspects; those which were practised by the 'founders'. The book as a whole is therefore well researched, written and very motivational. It should be required reading for courses on this subject, at high school and university level, where this crucial topic of animals/ecology certainly needs to be discussed in greater depth and scope.
