Not your traditional Holmes investigation, but I wish that I’d read it sooner….
By Holmes Fan
This book is not the usual Holmes case, where Holmes is front and foremost, making deductions and facing danger. In fact, for a great deal of the book he is on the sidelines while Dr. Watson acts as a historical detective, peeling away layers of misinformation while trying to determine the truth regarding one of England’s most famous – or infamous – kings, Richard III.

While Holmes is involved in another investigation, Watson sets out to determine the truth about whether or not Richard actually committed all of the terrible acts that are attributed to him. Was he truly a murderer, or was he much maligned after his death by his enemies, who wrote the histories at a later date? Watson’s activities take place in the summer of 1883, and he interviews several experts from that time who provide viewpoints on both sides of the argument. He also visits The Bloody Tower itself, where one of Richard’s most brutal acts allegedly took place.

I read a massive amount of traditional Holmes stories, set in the correct time period, and I try to buy every new one as it appears, but somehow I missed this one when it was initially published. I really wish that I had read it before I was able to go to England in September 2013 on a trip-of-a-lifetime Holmes Pilgrimage, where I spent several weeks visiting every Holmes-related site that I could find, following months of pre-planning and research. Of course I went to The Tower of London, since there are a great number of excellent pastiches set there, but I must confess that I was somewhat ignorant of this part of English history, except for the basic facts. I know that if I had read this book before going, I would have paid a lot more attention to some parts of The Tower during the morning that I spent there. (While reading this book, I went back and studied my many photographs from that day, so that I felt that I was walking along with Watson during his visit.)

I’m glad, however, for a different reason that I’m reading this book now and not earlier, because it gives me perspective on another set of books. During this past summer, my son talked me into reading A Game of Thrones and one or two others in that series. I dutifully forced my way through them, but only after reading this book by Mr. McLachlan did I realize just how much George R.R. Martin must have been influenced by this period of British history when constructing his novels. And I can tell you that I enjoyed this book a great deal more than the fantasy stories.

All in all, this is a very enjoyable book, and a quick read for something so full of tales about English kings and their battles. I see that Mr. MacLachlan has another Holmes book planned, and I will certainly keep an eye out for it.

Long Live Richard III!
By Jackie Cox
Jam-packed with all the arguments for and against Richard III. Dr. Watson is our hero here. Fun to read and worth keeping in our private libraries. Maybe this will help persuade you that Richard has been maligned by the Tudors and hence Shakespeare.

Thoroughly enjoyed!
By Janet O'Donnell
I have been reading books on Richard III for decades. I found this one to be both fun and informative at the same time. It gives the arguments both pro and con regarding events in Richard's life. With the discovery of his burial site, Richard III is very much in the news and I would think this book would be very helpful to anyone who is new to the subject and trying to learn more and to form an opinion.
