Even better the second time...a quarter of a century later.

When I was on a school field trip in the seventh grade, I took Stephen King's "IT" with me to read. The trip was going to be two days in Virginia, and was an example of staying overnight on a school trip. It should have been an adventure. The trip was frankly a waste, but the book was sublime.

I'd gotten into reading Stephen King two years before by way of a trip over the previous summer to my uncle's house. He had a collection of Stephen King novels and I'd started reading them with Pet Sematary, which had been adapted to the big screen two years before. In the intervening time, I'd devoured Salem's Lot, Carrie, Firestarter, and Misery, and The Shining. I found a copy of the 1990 TV movie adaptation and watched it. I recognized just how much I figured it had to have been toned down, but it was a decent primer (or so I thought). I felt warmed up and ready for the brick-like tome I'd acquired. I was wrong.

Reading the book was like a marathon, and I was prepared for a sprint. I easily identified with the younger versions of the characters, but had trouble with identifying with their adult incarnations. I appreciated the story and the implications of both eras, but entirely missed out on how well crafted the story was. In the end it took three weeks, but I completed the book, considered myself proud for conquering the nearly 1200 page tome, put it on the shelf, and...proceeded to put it out of my mind for nearly twenty five years. Almost, and entirely unintentionally, like the characters in the book...

Twenty five years later, I was on a kick of re-reading books I'd read as a kid, and then I approached Stephen King again. In the interim I'd devoured his books and probably thousands of other books by many dozens of different writers of differing skill levels, and when I thought "I should re-read some Stephen King" I thought about it, and it came down to either reading "IT" or "The Stand" and to be honest I felt "IT" was the better book. I remember it being a mountain for an adolescent. I wondered how I'd do this time.

It was SO MUCH better than I ever thought it would be!

I felt ACHINGLY nostalgic in the sections with the characters as kids. Whereas as a kid I identified with those elements as mapping directly onto my friends and setting, I did it unconsciously. Now I was (at times painfully) aware of it. I longed for the good times and friends of my youth. I appreciated how well King encapsulated the distance between childhood and adulthood and all the roads we travel in between. I reveled in how little we remember accurately about the past and how mutable it can be. I realized that IT was in fact two predators...both the eponymous monster who will kill and devour you, and the predator that robs us of our memories and the clarity we remember having as a kid.

The prose is wonderful. King doesn't use mere words to tell stories, he uses meanings themselves, woven seemingly seamlessly into shades of context and pigments of innuendo and occasionally bright, obvious splashes of unobfuscated emotion that jar you because...hey...in real life that's how it works. And in getting that right, King manages to make the impossible elements like the supernatural nature of IT and the relationship IT has with the town of Derry and the inhabitants there...normal. This could have happened. It could be happening. And it's that esoteric dread that King wields masterfully. The implications. The possibilities. Even in the fact that both eras are now, as of 2016, dated (the earlier phase was in the 50's, and the later phase was in the 80's...eerily we would be neck deep in the middle of the next cycle were it coming) was delightful. It was an added layer of nostalgia woven over the rest of the tapestry.

If you haven't read this book, read it now. Enjoy it. If you have read it, by all means read it again. It will thrill and delight and horrify and frighten you all over again.

One of may faves of all time (and I read A LOT)

I first read this book my sophomore year of college over Thanksgiving break. My employer would not give me time off to go home for the holiday and I had to stay in my off campus apartment. If you've ever been to a college campus over a holiday break, you know how deserted and creepy it can be. I made the mistake of reading this book and was so afraid that I slept on the sofa rather than venturing into my bedroom. I kept hearing noises outside my apartment door and the light bulb in the vestibule was burnt out! I don't scare easily, so the fact that I was completely terrified should tell you something about this book.

I won't go into the plot as I see there are plenty of reviews that do so we don't need another. I will say this: If you've seen the movie, please don't NOT read the book because you didn't like the movie. Stephen King's books go so much deeper than what Hollywood is able to carry over onto the big screen. There's so much character development and what's going on inside the character's heads that there is no way a movie adaptation could EVER come close to one of his books.

I just reread the book after 30 years and it's still just as good as it was back then. Only now I'm a constant reader and caught the Dark Tower references.

Smartly told scary story

I don't know why I haven't read IT sooner; Stephen King is the master story teller. The story changes perspective and time seamlessly. The Kindle version was nearly 1500 pages, but it never once felt long, even the narratives talking about Derry back in the day tied into the violence and horror perfectly. Another surprise was how much I loved these little kids, the bravery (and ignorance, if we are being honest) and love these kids possessed was heart warming, even when I was ready to poop my pants scared.

If you like horror and good story telling, this is the book for you.

Great for the chemistry and molecular biology major.

This organic chemistry textbook is great for the real hard core chemistry major and those people in the the fields of biochemistry, imunology, genetics and biophysics. The book assumes that the student has a good foundation in basic chemistry and that he/she is willing to learn material beyond the basic topic. The book has the best practice problems of any basic organic textbook.

There's a nightmarish sense of the domestic transformed in these interconnected stories about a 10-year-old loner. When Peter is quiet, it's because he's having "the weirdest" adventures in his head. They're experiences that grow out of the clutter of the kitchen drawer or the bombardment at the breakfast table. He loves his parents, but they crowd him. What would happen if he used vanishing cream? How would it feel to swap bodies with a cat, with a baby, with a grown-up? To actually, viscerally, be those creatures and still have your 10-year-old consciousness? The episode about the defeat of a bully is unconvincing, and at the end, Peter is too articulate about being on the edge of adulthood. But British author McEwan (whose prizewinning adult novels have been filmed) writes simple, visual prose--comic, deadpan, and lyrical--that captures the physicalness of the wild fantasy. The uneasiness remains. Things are put back together, but the world is not exactly right. The illustrations were not seen in galley, but there could be no better expression of Peter's vision than the kind of surreal artwork Browne has used in such books as Changes (1990), where the mundane is suddenly mad. Adults think that Peter Fortune is a difficult child because he sits by himself and stares into space. But, except for resultant absentmindedness, like forgetting his little sister on a bus, Peter's daydreams are usually harmless flights of fancy. The Daydreamer includes seven of these flights and four of them--``The Dolls,'' ``The Cat,'' ``The Baby,'' and ``The Grown-Up''--are metamorphosis experiences. ``The Cat'' is a beautiful story that tells of Peter's spirit climbing into the body of his old house cat, William. While in William's body, Peter experiences life as a cat and fights William's last territorial battle for him. Some of Peter's other experiences are less benign. For example, many children flirt with the idea of making their families disappear, but the way Peter goes about it in ``Vanishing Cream'' is rather gruesome. And when Peter verbally defeats the school bully in ``The Bully,'' Peter himself acknowledges that his words are unduly harsh. Although McEwan presents Peter as a sweet introvert, Peter proves himself to be far from that. Novelist McEwan's first book for children contains some magical moments but is marred by being often repetitive and occasionally mean-spirited. Transcendent.

My 11-year-old son and I listened to an audiotape of this book on a lengthy drive; we were rapt. My son, also a fantastical daydreamer, absolutely identified with the main character. Contrary to what some of the other reviewers reported, we found the stories extremely inventive and gripping. I found the final story about falling in love especially poignant and lovely. This book is written for children yet possesses good vocabulary and McEwan's incisive writing style. He does not dumb down the language nor the content for children. I recommend this book highly, and especially recommend the audiotape version--the narrator's reading is excellent.

How do you get your child to read more?

Buy him books like this! My 11 year-old son loved this book so much, he insisted that I read it, too. I'm glad I did; it's a lovely collection of stories about the vivid fantasy life of a young boy. Like many children, he often wishes to be other than he is - an adult, a baby, a hero. Our favorite story was the one in which the boy becomes his cat. This is a wonderful, thought-provoking book for children and adults, perfect for reading together.

Children have vivid imaginations, and the weird fantasies of a child are some of the most striking that a person can have. Ian McEwan's "Daydreamer" is one of those rare novels that kids and adults will enoy, though for very different reasons.
Ten-year-old Peter Fortune is supposedly a "difficult" boy, even though he's well-behaved and kind. That's only because he's a quiet loner -- he doesn't mind being around other people, but he prefers to withdraw into his vivid daydreams. When he and his sister fight and he receives his own room, an evil doll leads the other dolls to attack him. When an elderly cat is bullied by a younger cat, Peter becomes the cat for a day. He rubs vanishing cream on his family. He switches bodies with Kenneth, a wobbly toddler who tries to eat everything. He encounters a mystery burglar who has been robbing houses on his street. And he dreams of being an adult.
McEwan's books are usually much darker than "Daydreamer," but this book doesn't seem lightweight or dumbed-down. It's less like a novel than a series of seven interconnected short stories, each focusing on Peter and how reality shapes his daydreams. McEwan's writing is dreamy but realistic, and often very funny (such as Peter's reaction when he finds himself in Kenneth's baby body).
There's nothing objectionable in this book, and McEwan tinges the few frightening images with humor (when the dolls pull off one of Peter's limbs, he yells, "Hey, give those back!"). Kids will probably enjoy reading about Peter's daydreams, especially if they imagine such vivid things themselves. And adults may like getting a glimpse back in time of when they were able to dream that way. Peter has the purity of a child, knowing that a cat has a soul and feeling sorry for a bully he reduced to tears.
If you ever had weird, now-seeming-ridiculous fantasies (or if you still do -- not everybody stops!), then this book will bring a smile to your face.

Good Girl & Bad Boy Biker!

I like the way the characters develop in the story and that we are given some insight into who they are. Emma comes from a broken home where her mother packed up and left her and her father, who is an alcoholic cop, behind. She is resentful of them but she still loves them because they are her parents.

Emma's friend Delilah talks her into going to a party where a bunch of bikers are. She is the shy and reserved type girl, where as, her friend is outgoing and adventurous. She meets Kyle, who happens to be the brother of one of her fellow college classmates named Jack.

Kyle asks her out on a date but her mind seems to shift between both Kyle and his brother Jack. Both brothers are members of the same MC Club.

I recommend that you read Desire: Part One of Big Bear Outlaw MC Romance Series. You will want to know what will happen with Emma. Will she end up falling for Kyle, Jack, someone else or end up alone? I wonder what the impact that her father will have on her and the brothers relationships with him being a cop and them members of a MC Club. I can't wait for part two to find out what happens next!!!

First of three parts about Emma who is a straight laced college girl that still lives at home with her alcoholic cop father who catches the attention of Jack a bad boy biker who just happens to be in her English class. Yep, that’s right this biker is into higher education. One night Emma goes with a friend of her’s to the “other side of town” to a party that is full of bikers. There she sees Jack who is pretty cozy with some hot little number but the whole time Jack is getting busy with Madelyn his eyes are on Emma which Emma notices only because she can’t take her eyes off from Jack either. Now let’s throw Jack’s brother, Kyle in the mix and this only makes for a very interesting story. Kyle wasn’t like his brother he seen what he wanted so he didn’t waste time in asking Emma out; which she accepted.

Now the wait for the second part of this steamy story to see what the heck is going to happen. This should make for a pretty interesting read.

A 2015 must read. Hot sexy and desirable

This a awesome short story with more to come. Desire is about Emma Crawford who is a straight lace English student. Jack Hart is sexy bad boy who is in a motorcycle club. Emma goes to a party with a friend and runs into jack. She can't believe how sexy he is too bad he has a girlfriend. This is the 1st part of the story and it's an awesome read. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next two parts. This leads you up to a hot story. This book is a hot read that leaves you wanting more. It's a must read. You want something that will keep you on the edge of your seat. You won't be able to stop thinking about these characters. Absolutely loved this book. It's a 10 star all the way.. Charlotte Byrd is amazing author one of the best of 2015.

Torn from his family as a young boy during the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, Kaz fights his way across Europe in four different armies--Polish, Russian, German, and British. Follow in his footsteps as he is pushed to the limits of endurance and learns to survive as both a soldier and a prisoner of war. In the USA and in Russia, WWII is always presented as the war of choices, of good versus evil, and it has taken on a mythological aspect that obscures the reality that most people were apolitical until they no longer had the choice of remaining so.This story about the author's father makes it clear that whatever the great leaders of Europe were doing, the common man was just trying to stay alive, and that that mattered as much, or more, than the grand landscape of "history." The description of rural Poland at the outbreak of the war is also fascinating, in that the Poles have such a great reputation and long, long history of science and advanced scholarship (think of Copernicus or Marie Curie) that it is incredible to learn of the poverty and ignorance existing in the rural villages at the outbreak of WWII. The author's father's example of going from an illiterate rustic to a multi-lingual leader through only a short opportunity for training and learning provides a good answer to the old "nature versus nurture" question of human ability and potential. Surely without WWII his life would have been very different, and in many ways less rewarding. This is a book that should prompt a lot of reflection among those interested in history, and WWII in particular, and also those interested in a fascinating human interest story. Contains 12 photographs.

Honor thy father big time

The author combines real life stories from his father with a rare talent to create dialogue that accurately portrays the characters and a gripping account of the episodes that chronicler WW II events. One is left with feeling that Eric's father was a remarkable survivor who lived by his wits and ability to make his mark thru five uniforms.

Fascinating book!

What a fascinating book! This is based on the true story of Kaz Lichota’s unique experience during World War Two, fighting with various armies on both sides of the war. The author does an outstanding job of describing Kaz Lichota’s perspectives as a sixteen-year old Polish boy during the war. The book describes the scene when the Nazis invaded and the Polish men were ordered to meet at the town square to fight them. Kaz reported with a pitchfork, and his childhood friend brought a big stick and a kitchen knife. They were illiterate, did not have access to information or media, and went up against the Nazi army with household tools. The author also did a great job of describing life in Poland before the war and the experience of the POWs in a Romanian labor camp. Particularly heart-breaking were the experiences of women both before and during the war.

Overall, I would highly recommend. I always enjoy reading first-person accounts of WWII and this book had a very unique perspective.

Many books about World War II as seen from the bottom up are about the experience of a G.I., a British Tommy or a German Fritz, serving their national army and following it through often bloody battlefronts. This book is different. It builds on the unique experience of a Polish teenager who survived, almost magically, the onslaught of the German army (twice!), the Russians and finally the Allied troops in France's Normandy. For the young Pole, the experience was one of careful observing what is initially the enemy and constant learning under most trying circumstances. There are many nuggets for the experts of World War II going much beyond the story of one soldier, like the deadly treatment of Russian prisoners of war by the Germans in disregard of the Geneva conventions. The book is hard to put down once the story starts.

About the Author
Marcus G. Raskin is co-founder of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. Herbert J. Bernstein is profesor of physics at Hampshire College and visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a trustee of the Association of Members of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and a W.K. Kellogg National Fellow.

About the Author

Steven Cohen is executive director of Columbia University's Earth Institute and professor in the practice of public affairs at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He is also director of the masters program in sustainability management at Columbia's School of Continuing Education. At SIPA, Cohen directs the MPA in environmental science and policy, as well as the concentration in energy and environmental policy. He has served as a policy analyst and consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other government agencies. His books include Sustainability Management: Lessons from and for New York City, America, and the Planet and The Effective Public Manager, now in its fourth edition. Cohen is also a regular contributor to the Huffington Post.

Excellent book on policy

Professor Cohen (Now a vice-dean at Columbia University) presents a very easy to read and understand framework for interpreting environmental issues. To illustrate this, he applies his framework to a number of cases - toxic spills, the New York garbage crisis and more which underlines the different policy angles from which a specific environmental issue can be viewed. I highly recommend this book to any undergrad studying environmental policy and any graduate student looking to use a specific methodology for research.
