ADO.NET in a Nutshell, by Matthew MacDonald, Bill Hamilton

Written by experts on the Microsoft .NET programming platform, ADO.NET in a Nutshell delivers everything .NET programmers will need to get a jump-start on ADO.NET technology or to sharpen their skills even further. In the tradition of O'Reilly's In a Nutshell Series, ADO.NET in a Nutshell is the most complete and concise source of ADO.NET information available.ADO.NET is the suite of data access technologies in the .NET Framework that developers use to build applications services accessing relational data and XML. Connecting to databases is a fundamental part of most applications, whether they are web, Windows, distributed, client/server, XML Web Services, or something entirely different. But ADO.NET is substantially different from Microsoft's previous data access technologies--including the previous version of ADO--so even experienced developers need to understand the basics of the new disconnected model before they start programming with it.Current with the .NET Framework 1.1, ADO.NET in a Nutshell offers one place to look when you need help with anything related to this essential technology, including a reference to the ADO.NET namespaces and object model. In addition to being a valuable reference, this book provides a concise foundation for programming with ADO.NET and covers a variety of issues that programmers face when developing web applications or Web Services that rely on database access. Using C#, this book presents real world, practical examples that will help you put ADO.NET to work immediately.Topics covered in the book include:

  • An Introduction to ADO.NET
  • Connections, Commands and DataReaders
  • Disconnected Data
  • Advanced DataSets
  • Transactions
  • DataViews and Data Binding
  • XML and the DataSet
Included with the book is a Visual Studio .NET add-in that integrates the entire reference directly into your help files. When combining ADO.NET in a Nutshell with other books from O'Reilly's .NET In a Nutshell series, you'll have a comprehensive, detailed and independent reference collection that will help you become more productive.

Awesome reference manual
By Carlos Salvatierra
I bought the paperback in 2005 and used it heavily. Somehow I lost the paperback and now bought it again in kindle. Very well written reference manual and the best I have seen on the topic.

Excellent reference, and a good introduction to ADO
By Jack D. Herrington
This book is classic O'Reilly. It's separated into three sections. The first being a thorough but brief introduction to all aspects of the API. The second section is an API reference. And the third a quick reference. This third section is included on the CD that comes with the book and will integrate into Visual Studio.
Don't expect the first section of the book, which is an introduction to ADO.NET to give you a gentle introduction to the subject. That's not the Nutshell form. If you don't know ADO at all you will want to buy both this book and an introductory book. If you know related APIs, or you know ADO.NET and you need a refresher or have weak spots you will find some new things in the first section. For me it was the support for disconnect access and also the integration with the XML features of SQL Server 2000.
Although this book stays true to the Nutshell form it is a little longer in the introduction than the usual. The introductory section is seventeen chapters and is almost half of the length of the book. So if you are an intermediate or advanced engineer I think you could probably learn enough ADO directly from this book without any other introductory book.

Incredible!
By Keith
I've owned this book for 3 days and cannot put it down! I have not been a big fan of O'Reilly over the years, but this book is "incredible". It goes into the detail that most books seem to omit and it's those details that we "developers" desperately need.
I would recommend this book to ANY and ALL .NET developers who are writing code that hits against a database. There are topics covered in this book that Microsoft's own MSDN and VS.NET help system seem to fail at properly explaining. It's because of this that I've found myself (all too often) going to codeguru.com and google groups to get answers to ADO.NET questions that this book actually covers.
My hat goes off to authors Matthew MacDonald and Bill Hamilton on a job well done.
Coming from a Visual Basic background and now working in VB.NET and C#.NET, this book should satisfy both the VB.NET and C# developer.

Hormegeddon: How Too Much Of A Good Thing Leads To Disaster, by Bill Bonner

“Hormegeddon” is the term coined by entrepreneur and New York Times Bestselling Author Bill Bonner to describe what happens when you get too much of a good thing in the sphere of public policy, economics and business. Simply put, it ends in disaster.

Drawing on stories and examples from throughout modern political history—from Napoleon's invasion of Russia to the impending collapse of the American healthcare system, from the outbreak of WWII and the fall of the Third Reich to the 21st century War on Terror, from the Great Recession to the sovereign debt crisis—Bonner pursues a modest ambition: to understand what goes wrong.

History is not a clean yarn spun by its victors. It is a long tale of things that went FUBAR—debacles, disasters, and catastrophes. That each disaster carries with it a warning is what makes it useful to study. For instance, if the architect of a great ship tells you that ‘not even God himself could sink this ship,' you should take the next boat. If the stock market is selling at 20 times earnings and all the expert analysts urge you to ‘get in’ because you ‘can’t lose’—it’s time to get out!

Similarly, public policy disasters are what you get when well meaning people with this same Titanic degree of certitude apply rational, small-scale problem-solving logic to inappropriately large scale planning. First, you get a declining rate of return on your investment (of time or resources) until you hit zero. Then, if you keep going through the zero floor—and you always keep going—you get a disaster.

The problem is, these disasters cannot be stopped by well-informed smart people with good intentions, because they are the people who cause them in the first place.

From the mind of Bill Bonner comes Hormegeddon, a phenomenon that occurs when a small dose of something produces a favorable result, but if you increase the dosage, the results end in disaster. The same applies when the world gets too much of a good thing in public policy, economics, and business. Drawing on examples throughout modern political history, Bonner brings context and understanding to this largely ignored and anonymous phenomenon.

Review
"This is a must, must, must read exposition of the side effect of government. It exposes the problem of naive interventionism, the iatrogenics of bureaucracies, and the growing absence of skin-in-the-game (Hammurabi's problem), in addition to the deformities of the modern state, and shows how such a system is bound to explode under the weight of fragility. It is deep, illustrative, witty, pleasant to read. Buy two copies, one for yourself, another for the nearest policy maker." - Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Distinguished Professor of Risk Engining, NYU, author of The Black Swan and Antifragile.

"I am seldom jealous of anybody, but I truly envy Bill Bonner's writing and intellectual skills. I read his notes every day because of his perfect prose and his deep insights into economics, and investment markets. But, Hormegeddon, is by far the best Bonner ever produced. It is funny, cynic, sarcastic, highly informative, beautifully written, entertaining, and most importantly, written by a man who is not afraid to tell the truth, and stand up for it. I do not say this often, but when I read his Hormegeddon, I was truly in awe." - Marc Faber, publisher of the Gloom Boom & Doom Report, director of investment advising firm Marc Faber Ltd.

Another moneygrabber.
By Mickster747
While I think it is a scholarly treatment of what our economic policies will most likely lead to, I resent the fact that there is not a single word regarding what the average taxpayer can do to survive any potential impending financial cataclysm. Clearly the author is reeling us in to spend more money to purchase more of his product once we agree that we are "in for it". The author may be entirely right in his assertions but he clearly wants to make a bundle of money from people buying his newsletters and publications. I am delighted that he can purchase a multimillion dollar secluded ranch. More power to him. Unfortunately if he had a deep concern for humanity, he would disseminate the solution to this problem for free. But then he might not be able to support his lavish life style. In the final analysis, his initial spiel says that he will ask for NO MONEY. As usual however he does. If you want to know how to protect yourself from this possible future, you have to pay him more.

For a few dollars more...
By Brunolem
Bill Bonner is one of the rare wise men still living on this planet. He is also a brilliant writer. His new book is very well thought and documented, reminiscent of Nicolas Taleb writings. As a matter of fact, the latter happens to be the one who reviewed Bonner's book. Great minds...

Thanks to his considerable skills, Bill Bonner is also a very keen investor who has built an impressive fortune, a not so secret fact that he likes to share with his readers.

This leads me to wonder why he needs to charge almost 22 bucks for a Kindle edition of his latest book, much more than most famous writers charge for their books.

Doesn't too much money lead to hormegeddon?

To whichever end of the spectrum your beliefs gravitate-toward spirituality or science-the universe is an astonishing place. But what if our increasing knowledge in both science and spirituality is pointing us all in the same direction? The author makes a convincing case for exactly that premise-that spirituality and quantum physics are, in fact, two sides of the same coin: the presence of a guiding intelligence in the universe, the presence of God. Drawing upon the latest information on near-death experiences, quantum physics, biblical interpretation, and even the mysterious nature of light, Baumann paints a picture of what may well be the true nature of our universe.

Great read & good mind stretcher!
By A Customer
Valuable for anyone interested in theology, physics, or both. Dr. Baumann's book is cogently written, with excellent endnotes/references for all chapters. The author convincingly and eruditely presents how quantum physics (among other areas of modern science) supports many spiritual beliefs/concepts pertaining to the afterlife, nature of the universe, multiple dimensions, etc. Likewise, he challenges our ideas of what we might conventionally perceive as "reality" with various plausible theories of existance based on the latest revelations in quantum mechanics, cosmology, the natural sciences, etc.
Even if you don't agree with all of its ideas/conclusions (the author certainly doesn't jam them down your throat), this book is most worthwhile to provoke thought, and it just might inspire you to further pursue such studies on your own.
I most heartily recommend this book!

An interesting and different perspective
By rowley32256
T. Lee Baumann MD is a physician and medical administrator. In this short book he discusses reasons for believing in spirituality. Dr. Baumann is impressed with the unique properties of light, including that it is the only thing in the physical universe that can travel at the speed of light: "everything in the universe, past, present, and future, is connected to everything else, by a web of electromagnetic radiation that 'sees' everything at once." Making an extrapolation that I have not seen elsewhere, Dr. Baumann conjectures awareness on the part of light: "even if light does not possess a consciousness as we know it, it appears to exhibit an acute awareness of its surroundings and reacts accordingly." Referring to examples such as the double-split experiment and non-locality, Dr. Baumann seems open to a David Bohm type of implicate order to the universe, although he does not cite Bohm as a reference. Of the soul, he makes the following statement: "To say the soul occupies a place means that it exists in some sort of space, either the one we ordinarily perceive, or some other. In that case one may then ask questions about the size, shape, orientation and motion of the soul, all concepts that are totally inappropriate to something composed of thoughts rather than materials."

The author acknowledges that many of his ideas are conjecture: "I am not naive enough to think that humankind is capable of uncovering the innermost thoughts of the Great Almighty. Rather, the hypotheses stated here are merely that - speculation upon the workings of a very special but mysterious universe." It would be good if we could see similar cognitive humility on the part of the materialist who similarly speculate but without such a candid caveat emptor.

This was just what I was looking for.
By Bill Groves
I had been looking for a book that specifically corelated the scientific structure and nature of light with spirituality. This book did just that. Don't expect an intensly dry scientific, deeply scholarly approach. The book is fairly simple and to the point, but it makes it's point in a clear, readable, straigtforward way. By addressing near death experiences, quantam studies of light, and the cosmological anthropic priciple Baumann makes a case for the existence of God, spirituality, and its immanent proximity to our experience. He does a little Biblical apologetics that is OK, but a tad fundamental for me. Overall I genuinely enjoyed and appreciated this book and would strongly recommend it to those looking into this subject.

About the Author

Jason Goodwin is a developer who is primarily self-taught. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to study business at school, but he started programming when he was 15 and always had a high level of interest in technology. This interest led his career to take a few major changes away from the business side and back into software development. His journey has led him to working on high-scale distributed systems. He likes to create electronic music in his free time.

He was first introduced to an Akka project at a Scala/Akka shop―mDialog―that built video ad insertion software for major publishers. The company was acquired by Google eventually. He has also been an influential technologist in introducing Akka to a major Canadian telco to help them serve their customers with more resilient and responsive software. He has experience of teaching Akka and functional and concurrent programming concepts to small teams there. He is currently working via Adecco at Google.

Amazing book for learning akka from scratch.
    By Sunil Kavali
An Amazing introduction to akka. Tried to read the akka documentation which was dry and lengthy, so brought this book to read it in kindle. The book is very enjoyable. The reader is expected to know scala or java.

    Excellent Introduction to Akka
    By Abhishek Srivastava
This book is great to get you started to Akka. Prior to this I was lost between multiple blogs and internet resources. This book is very nice and gave me a solid start. Now every other resource on the internet is making sense to me.

Thank you so much to the author. Jason Goodwin. I really like his writing style and the content of the book.

Great introduction to Akka to get going fast. Code in the Kindle version is unformatted and hard to read, though.
    By C. Berkebile
Great content. This will definitely get you started with Akka if you haven't already used it.

The book assumes a working knowledge of either Scala or Java 8. Code examples are always provided in both languages, so you only need to know one of the two. This book also assumes knowledge of basic Java concurrency features (synchronization, atomics, volatile, etc.). You don't need to be an expert with Java concurrency to read this book, but you should at least know what synchronization is in Java and how to do it, for example.

I read the Kindle version. A heads up, (and, this is the reason I docked a star), the code examples are not formatted for the Kindle (who needs line breaks?). Luckily, there is a GitHub repository where the example code resides which is much easier to read.

The book introduces you to Akka via a very hands-on approach, asking you to write the code for two applications you build upon as you progress through the material. Homework assignments are provided at the end of each chapter to test your comprehension. I prefer hands-on approaches and this is the reason I give the book a solid 4 stars. Don't expect this to be all-inclusive. This will get you productive in Akka fast, but you will not REALLY know what you are doing if this is all you read. However, that is exactly what I needed (I recently picked up a project that relies heavily on Akka) for me to get started with hacking on Akka based projects.

If you are a swift learner, you could get through this book in two 8 hour work days by skimming it if you know Scala pretty well (prior knowledge of Futures, Promises, Concurrency, Scala's type system features like case classes or Java 8 lambdas, etc. really helps, here). I got through half of the material in 6 hours. Most people will probably want to take a week to digest the material presented in this book and work through the examples, though.

I really liked being able to compare the Java vs the Scala code side-by-side throughout the book.

A practical approach for anyone aiming to speak Italian.
    Very straightforward.
A great reinforcement to what I have learned using the Rosetta Stone program (3/4 of the way to completion).
The book clearly explains the grammar and usage issues I was having:
Della carta da scrivere (some writing paper)
    Una marita - (a pencil)
(I did not realize del, dei, degli, della meant some, therefore did not know when to use the forms of this word vs. la, un, una, etc.)

Nor did I realize Italian grammar is more difficult than English grammar. Pronunciation actually easier, thus spelling as well.

    I will use this book.

Helps greatly with pronunciation and a great price!
    By Passing Through
I am just learning Italian and this book has been very helpful! I needed a book to help me with pronunciation and this is just what I received with this book. As a beginner of Italian, I really need the help of how to pronounce the Italian words. I wish more books/workbooks did this. I am glad I bought this book and would recommend it if you don't know how to pronounce Italian. We also just started Duolingo on our phone {free} and purchased Rosetta Stone italian to have with the little ones.

This book is a great price at $3.50! I bought several more to have in our home for family to use as we're learning.

Low phrase count makes product nearly useless
    By Charles Mason Shunk Jr.
The title promises 770 basic phrases. Easily three quarters or more of these "phrases" are simply the same phrase repeated, with only a word or two difference. An example from page 34: Phrase #424 is "I should like to have [some cake]." Phrases 425 - 430 then tell you how to say you want pie, cheese, cookies, custard, chocolate ice cream and vanilla ice cream. Hm, couldn't I just have consulted a pocket dictionary? Meanwhile, the section on "Difficulties and Repairs", (i.e. situations where you might really need a phrase book), there are a mere 13 phrases!

I found this book nearly useless for my purposes. There aren't nearly enough phrases to rely on the book as an on-the-spot, pocket communication tool, largely because it substitutes too much vocabulary for phraseology. And yet it doesn't have nearly enough vocabulary to make me feel like I could get away without having a pocket dictionary.
