The two attempt to figure out why Annie is here, as they begin to develop feelings for each other. Though Howe employs a well-worn trope—the concept of a spirit who can't rest until a terrible wrong is rectified—she does so deftly, ratcheting up the tension as she switches between the protagonists' first-person perspectives and weaving in themes of class and privilege. I devoured this book. It is a suspenseful and intriguing read about an impossible romance set against the backdrop of NYC, both in the present and in 1825. The main characters Wes and Annie are incredibly well-developed and fascinating and the story is a wonderful mix of historical fiction, romance and the supernatural. A terrific book for readers of all ages.

Compelling mix of historical fiction, the supernatural and romance

This is a wonderful mix of historical fiction, the supernatural, and romance. While studying at NYU in hopes of becoming a documentary film maker, Wes meets and strange but lovely girl, Annie. He and his buddy are filming a seance and Annie is blocking the shots. The narrative shifts between NYC in 1825 and the present, and from the first person perspective of first Wes, then Annie. This is brilliantly done.

Don't let the 400 pages scare you. I bought the book yesterday and finished it today. It's fast-paced, has a good mystery, some twists, and the characters are all fascinating.

Highly recommended for readers 14 and up.

You know what pains me the most about doing non-spoiler reviews? The fact that I can't fully describe how I felt about a story.

Here's my problem. The Appearance Of Annie Van Sinderen was such a spectacular read, that I want to yell to the skies above about every moment, every emotion, every DETAIL, of what I experienced. Buttttttt since I want my readers to go in with an open mind, (open mouth sounded way too pervy lol) I'll try to refrain from spilling too many beans . . .

The Appearance of Annie is one of those stories that completely flew over my head for the first 200 or so pages. I was so engrossed by the mysterious creepiness of the writing and characters, that I never bothered to stop and think, " why exactly is all of this even HAPPENING? " Every couple or so pages, I'm literally saying aloud, " WHAT IS GOING ON? " because I was so freaking lost, but in the best damn way. It reminded me of the time my step-sister and I were lost in New York. We didn't panic, or even care to be honest, because we were so in AWE of our surroundings, so swept up into the energy of the city, and if any experience could be compared to reading this book, this would definitely be it.

My absolute favorite thing about The Appearance of Annie is the plot. The characters could've been as flat as my next door neighbor's booty, (they weren't of course) and I bet you a pre-order, I would've loved it all the same. The story follows our two main characters Wes and Annie in a very strange way. Wes, a college student attending NYU's summer program for film, and Annie a . . . girl from the . . . 1800's. Part one is told from Wes's perspective and all his typical boy glory. I loved his character, especially his passion for making documentaries, which happens to be a serious obsession of mine. Annie's perspective on the other hand, was a wholeee nother ball game. I was so intrigued by her story, and how the author cleverly weaved the classic tale of Rip Van Winkle into the mix.

Speaking of Rip Van Winkle, remember how he fell asleep, then woke up in a time completely different from his own? Well, imagine my expression when I FINALLY discovered that the same had happened to Annie. Can you even cope with being born in a time where they didn't have cars, cellphones, or even airplanes? Then BAM, you wake up and your town seems normal, but suddenly cobblestone streets turn into slick pavement, markets and other grubby buildings turn into sleek glass structures scraping the sky, and even walking down the street feels like your watching some type of weird porn. I would've totally s*** my pants. Howe infused historical fiction with our modern day world, allowing the story to be not only amusing, (Annie's reactions to the new-age was so cute) but trippy as hell. To say I was a kid in a candy store would be an understatement.

Katherine's work is so pleasantly unreal, allowing readers the perfect fictional escape.
I found myself completely taken away by the premise, the characters, the flow, even the charm of it all, and before I knew it, the story had ended, and far to quickly for my tastes. I adored this unusual take on a love story between two characters from two different centuries, not to forget the quirky secondary characters that made the story that much more enjoyable.

The writing was beyond captivating, with the perfect mixture of a well done contemporary, fantasy, a sprinkle of historical fiction, and a dash of paranormal elements, making this a special treat for every reader. The Appearance of Annie Van Sinderen mashes the past and present, real with the unreal, so if you're ready to frazzle your wits with this out of body experience, I highly recommend you pick this up.

It does an excellent job of documenting the (often unknown) history that inevitably lead up to YARN from previous versions of Hadoop, which provides a valuable canvas against which to present the remaining pragmatically-oriented text. Moving from the history of YARN, it wisely jumps right into getting the reader up and running with their own YARN setup (on a single machine or on a larger cluster) such that the rest of the text is not merely conjecturing, but real guidance for a real instance of YARN. Chapters 7 and 8 were the ones I was most looking forward to in the text from the start, as those "core" components of YARN are some of the ones which are least understood and yet concurrently most impacting on performance. They did not disappoint."

About the Author

Arun Murthy has contributed to Apache Hadoop full-time since the inception of the project in early 2006. He is a long-term Hadoop committer and a member of the Apache Hadoop Project Management Committee. Previously, he was the architect and lead of the Yahoo Hadoop MapReduce development team and was ultimately responsible, technically, for providing Hadoop MapReduce as a service for all of Yahoo--currently running on nearly 50,000 machines. Arun is the founder and architect of the Hortonworks Inc., a software company that is helping to accelerate the development and adoption of Apache Hadoop. Hortonworks was formed by the key architects and core Hadoop committers from the Yahoo! Hadoop software engineering team in June 2011. Funded by Yahoo! and Benchmark Capital, one of the preeminent technology investors, their goal is to ensure that Apache Hadoop becomes the standard platform for storing, processing, managing, and analyzing big data.

Vinod Kumar Vavilapalli has been contributing to Apache Hadoop project full-time since mid-2007. At Apache Software Foundation, he is a long-term Hadoop contributor, Hadoop committer, member of the Apache Hadoop Project Management Committee, and a foundation member. Vinod is a MapReduce and YARN go-to guy at Hortonworks Inc. For more than five years, he has been working on Hadoop. Too many circumlocutions that never get to the point. You will need to augment this text, with internet-based resources.

I can't give this book a great rating. In so many places it took five, six, seven or more sentences to say what could be said in one or two well-written, forceful sentences. To some degree I can look past that, were it not for this: even after an unnecessary circumlocution, the point was never firmly made, if at all. Sadly, I had to take my understanding of YARN back to the internet, post my book purchase.

This book mostly provides introduction and theory on Hadoop with YARN features with installation guide.

The book severely lacking hands-on examples to get the feeling of working on Hadoop. The books's web page says for last one month "We are in the process of uploading all the code from the book. Please come back again in a while! "

"O'Regan is my guru!"

At last - a book on auditing that combines verve, panache, and a mountain of useful information. I have been an avid follower of O'Regan's writing for several years - his classy articles and IIA books have been a constant companion in my professional life as an auditor. He seems sometimes to be leading a one-man crusade to lift auditing writing out of its generally stuffy doldrums and onto a higher plane.
"International Auditing" is O'Regan's best achievement to date, and the intellectual self-confidence that underpins it is almost breathtaking. Who else would dare to undertake, in one book, all of the following: a history of auditing in its various forms, guidance on international risks, advice on logistics and safety, and a detailed country guide that covers economics, politics, history, and demographics? In my opinion the country guides are worth the price of the book alone, and are a pleasure to read.
In summary, my message to O'Regan is "Well done!" More, please...

O'Regan an inspiration to all Auditors

O'Regan's book is an inspiration to read, in the office or in your leisure. A 'must have' for auditors embarking on international assignments. A breath of fresh air for auditing books normally associated with endless jargon and complex terminology. This book has completely transformed my image of global auditing, so much so, that I aim to adventure into the world of international auditing very soon.

A MUST FOR THE AUDIT BOOK SHELF

A truely inspirational read. The chapters are juxtaposed with succintness and clear, precise, useful, practical information.
This is one of the first books I've seen in its genre - unique.
As an experience 'travelling' global auditor I found this book invaluable, it is definitely useful reference material for the spectrum of audit staff from Audit Directors to the juniors on their first field audit. I have passed this book down to all my colleagues as basic training material.

Deserves its place on any system admin's bookshelf

Even though the topic of GNU/Linux system administration is a very fast moving target with lots of features being added to Linux environment nearly every few months (and thus rendering many books a little bit outdated), some books are good enough to have a place on the bookshelf of a system administrator. Linux Server Hacks Volume 2, together with Volume 1, is one of those books. Whether you are responsible for a few Linux servers or trying to manage a few thousand servers, the tips and tricks presented in this book will prove to be a valuable asset for your skill set (though, if you're managing a few thousand Linux servers than you'll probably know at least %50 or more of the tips provided in the book).

The book is guaranteed to be a very good and advanced starting point for topics related but not limited to authentication, remote GUI connectivity, storage management, file sharing and synchronizing resources, security / lockdown instructions, log files and monitoring, troubleshooting, system rescue, recovery, and repair. Especially the chapters about heterogeneous network environments in which Linux and Windows machines should work in harmony is a very critical one for many sys. admins. And I'm sure all the geeks and nerds out there will enjoy reading Hack #20 "Hack 20. Quick and Easy DHCP Setup" and Hack #21 "Integrate DHCP and DNS with Dynamic DNS Updates".

More specialized than Volume 1

This is a very good book. These remarks are for Linux users on the way up. If you are already an über-üser, well, you will probably like this book anyway.

If you don't have the first volume, you might want to start with it. It has some simple but very useful things that apply to just about anyone with their own Linux box and a command line.

This volume is much more advanced, and most of the tricks and techniques deal with much more specialized problem domains, ie. things you might not have run into yet. One advantage of this book over the first is that it is very up to date in its recommendations of existing software to use.

Recognizing a player when she sees one, Janine agrees to co-star with her handsome employer fully intending to keep their relationship strictly professional. First break she gets, she's heading to Hollywood.

Their jungle-themed commercials take a crazy twist, and Tanner finds himself falling...from a sales banner while chasing a monkey. But more importantly, he's falling for Janine. She's just the one woman to tame this cowboy's wild heart. Convincing her to stay with him might be harder than catching a mischievous monkey.

Tarzan & Janine

Tanner Peschke's father wants him to take over the family's car dealership. However, Tanner's dad is concerned that Tanner doesn't have what it takes to make a profit because Tanner has an annoying habit of buying into every sob story a chick will hand him. With a three month deadline to prove he can turn a profit, Tanner hires Janine, an actress he accidentally got fired, to help him do a series of live "Tarzan and Jane" themed commercials. With each commercial being a total farce, the city takes notice and the two become local celebrities. Janine wants to be taken seriously as an actress and Tanner wants Janine to take him seriously as a love interest. Will these two ever land on the same page?

This was cute! It's definitely trying to get the laughs and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it's an entertaining read. This is definitely a humor driven contemporary romance, and it's not a *clean* one for those wondering. There are a few sex scenes but they aren't long and really graphically drawn out.

I would say the commercials are probably the best part of the book. As a romance, it's a little bit lacking in that department. Tanner and Janine are fun characters, but we're not going swimming in the deep end of the pool with this. But, this isn't a serious kind of book, it's comedy first and foremost. If you're looking for something lighthearted, cute, simple, and fun to read with a small splash of romance, this should work for you.

Comedic genius - Very funny story and great start to new series

What do you get when you mix a used car sales man and a wanna be actress together - plenty of laugh out loud moments.

Tanner Peschke along with his friends are all billionaire's but chose to keep it to themselves and continue to work normal jobs. On his mother's death bed Tanner promised her that he would stand by his father and that meant running his father's use car dealership even though he hated it. On a trip to buy used cars Tanner runs into Janine literally while she is riding a mechanical bull where she is doing a part time gig which causes her to lose her job. Feeling both sorry for her and realizing he could use her to his advantage he offers her a job in his upcoming commercials for the dealership. What he didnt count on was falling for her.

Janine has had one goal in her life and that is to be an actress. She hasn't had much luck so far so after Tanner gets her fired she figures why not take him up on his offer of doing commercials.

What poor Janine didn't count on was a monkey that gets more than fresh, a boa that takes her breath away or a camel that just runs away with her. But the biggest thing she didn't count on was falling for the handsome used car dealer. Falling in love is not in her plans. As soon as her agent has a deal for her in LA she is gone.

Will these two be able to make it work??????

The secondary characters of Tanner's father and his friend were almost as funny as the disasters of the commercials.

The writers did a fantastic job at making you feel like you were there during all the disasters of the commercials. Your laughing till almost crying. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series from these two.

Delilah Devlin, and Elle James both write amazing stories. When I heard they teamed up for one I jumped in line to be the first to read it, and I was not disappointed. Tarzan and Janine, is a fun romantic comedy about a used car salesman and a want-to-be actress. It takes you through their hilarious journey to find the love they didn't realize they were looking for. Their path will take you through high flying antics, with a monkey, a snake and even a camel. This book will have you laughing out loud and leave you wanting more. A must read for all.
