About the Author

Bill Hybels is the founding and senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill., and chairman of the board for the Willow Creek Association. This has been an excellent study guide for our small group. We are an adult group with new christians and long time mature christians. It has been good for all of us. It is clear, concise, and encourages good discussion.

Bluntly Stated and Practicable

If you love the book of James as I do (I find it the most bluntly stated and among the most practicable books in the Bible), then you'll enjoy going through this Bill Hybels Small Group Study Guide on the book. Definitely worth going through as a group, as it was designed, though very good for two people as well.

A Guide in the Truest Sense

What I liked:

1) The Tone
He's direct but not dry. There are no personal anecdotes about his own fashion mistakes or how dressing well changed his life, etc. He's not a cheer leader and there are no promise of a better life via a well chosen sweater. It's a guide on dressing well and his message is very direct and to the point. It's objective (well, about as objective as you can be about fashion) yet he writes well enough that you won't feel like you're reading a text book or a manual.

2) Breadth of Knowledge and Organization
He covers a lot of topic but breaks it down into chunks, and organizes them in a way that makes sense. Gallichio clearly knows what he's talking about and he covers the more esoteric topics as well as the basics. It's not just "wear this, not that". He teaches you how to shop, what details to look for, how to measure properly, etc.

3) Timeless Advice
It's not trendy. If you want to know what's in and what's not for this season, invest in a fashion magazine. This is a great guide to use if you want to establish a basic foundation to build on.

4) High Standards
In a culture where quantity trumps quality this guide might seem a bit unrealistic; fashion can be expensive. However this guide encourages you to invest in things that will last and teaches you how to spot well made clothing.

5) Visual Guides
One reviewer mentioned lack of pictures. I think the amount of illustration is appropriate for this guide.

What I Didn't Like

1) Formatting
I think the author meant to insert links. I have the Kindle Touch and the links didn't work for me. However, they're not crucial to the guide so it didn't bother me.

This is a great reference for someone looking to improve the way they look. I found it very easy to read and approachable. The author avoids the generic "Wear this and you will look cool" approach that seems to characterize most books/forums in this genre and instead gives easy to understand and practical advice on how to create a more personal style that is more in tune with the kind of image you want to project to the people you meet.

I think the advice given in this book is useful for everybody, from men who want to undertake a stylistic overhaul, to men who could simply use some pointers to think about when they are trying to find clothes that make them look good.

Like the title says: Highly recommended.

Great Book, great price! As someone that likes to dress well and doesn't always have the time to spend trawling through mags or online, this book has given me some great tips that work for me! It's very well written, with some great illustrations and insights. Recommended!

Audiophiles Should Read This Book!

Ok. The author is a "somebody" in the world of high-end audio. I recognized his name from articles appearing in Stereophile magazine, most recently in the January 2015 issue. He knows more about the recording process than most anyone. He communicates his ideas very well, but, most importantly, he address the most relevant subjects and issues.

This is a great book for an audiophile to read because it examines the details of source origination -- the recording process -- and relates it directly to the playback process. The chapters on mastering are must reading, especially the discussion of loudness, monitor quality, and monitor setup. Oh, and don't forget the chapter on jitter. This term is thrown around in audio equipment analysis as if everyone knows what it is. The discussion is so confusing elsewhere, one might be thinking it has something to do with insects dancing inside a USB cable (jitterbugs). Read what Katz has to say. Very informative.

I loved the book, and will keep it as a reference. Too bad it didn't come with a hard cover, or a better cover. The cover paper is really cheap quality, but I won't subtract a star for that.

The best book on mastering just got better, again.

What can I say, this is the 3rd time I have purchased this book and it just keeps getting better and more up to date. Bob is the guru of audio mastering without a doubt, and his technical information is well worth reading for all stripes of audio engineers, not just those with designs on mastering. There are tidbits throughout, so you don't have to read it cover to cover, just open a section and get up to speed quickly.

Worth the money
By home handy man
This is good for weekend do it yourselfers. It shows how to take panels apart (where the clips are) and general auto theory and what most of the engine controls look like. I didn't see anything about tire pressure monitoring, and they don't try to point you to defective parts other than giving the codes for a code reader. They try to cover the 4 different engines that came with them-so there isn't much detail on each one. It's worth the $$ but has the common shortfalls.

A great resource, but...

This is a great manual for people who have the 3.5L and 3.6L V6 engines with these cars, but is not comprehensive. This manual covers too many cars to be specific to certain models. It covers two generations and three (four technically) different cars, each with two to three different engine and transmission configurations. I would have liked it more if there were two separate manuals; one for the 2007-2010 Chrysler Sebring and 2008-2010 Dodge Avenger, and another for the 2011-2014 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger respectively.

One thing to note is that for some of the instructions and illustrations/pictures for the 3.5L, while are helpful, are taken from the RWD variant (Rotated 90 degrees) and are thus not applicable to the transverse mounted 3.5L in the FWD Avenger and Sebring. Such examples are timing cover removal and anything to do with the front of the engine.

The entire manual seems to be a copy and paste hodge-podge from other repair manuals that use the same motors or transmission.

All this being said, it is extremely helpful, and better than nothing for sure, and I am thankful to Haynes for making it in the first place. I just wish it was less clunky.

    Gentle Introduction to Cassandra

    Having worked with many relational and NoSQL databases across multiple web and mobile projects, I was recently in need of a quick introduction to Cassandra. I picked up this and the more advanced Cassandra books from Packt when they were on sale recently.

    While a book can quickly get out of date, I've so far found Learning Apache Cassandra is suitable (as of this writing) for getting in and fairly painlessly getting a handle on the basic capabilities and differences between Cassandra and other dbs. I'm particularly interested in learning about table structure, performant schema design, query patterns, and the like. The first few chapters (after the typical getting started/installed stuff), walk through an ongoing example of a twitter-like clone. The author does a decent job of building "features" of the project while tying it back to real world use-cases.

    Later chapters discuss basic performance considerations, denormalization, and more complex data representation.

    As an introduction and familiarization book, there was enough general detail that it should be useful for a while with respect to versions of Cassandra. It will definitely give you enough to branch out to more advanced books or resources on the web. In general this met my expectations.

    For books of this kind to get 5 stars, I like to see how things develop with respect to the book being kept up to date and having "ever green" web resources, so it is too soon to tell on that front.

    A good introduction to Apache Cassandra 4.5 Stars

    If you have some database development background and wish to get a good solid introduction to Apache Cassandra then you might want to take a look at this book by Mat Brown. Mr. Brown has packed a lot of information on the basics of Cassandra into a 250 page book. The book is very readable, well laid out, has many clear examples and very nice illustrations. I think as a introduction it was a great choice for Mr Brown to use Cassandra's CQL as the programming tool of choice.

    What I like to see in the second edition is Authentication and Authorization moved into the beginning of the main book as it is a fact of life. I also would like more read and write consistency example as another reviewer asked. It would be nice if the Table level create options could be covered in an Appendix I think it would be useful for both developers and Admins.

    Ok my only warning for potential readers is if you don't have a relational database background it will take you more time to work through the book as Mr Brown uses many comparisons of Casandra features to relational systems.

    Thanks to Mat, this book is awesome. I read almost all the books on Cassandra available, and somehow I missed this one. This happens to be my latest reading.
    One question I have for Mat on Pp 170 of the book. While the diagram seems to be correct, the explanation between the two diagrams on this page, for me, looks incorrect. I could be mistaken.

    In my opinion the explanation should say Alice is on Node3, Bob is on Node1 and Ivan is on Node2

    Am I missing something. If any one could clarify I would appreciate it.

    Five stars for this book and the author.
