Not as advertised

I was looking forward to reading Michael Phelps account of his London olympic experience, since it was prominently advertised on the cover. NOT!! This is the old "Beneath the Surface", with 5 pages of comments by the editor on Michael's 2012 Olympic performance attached to the front of the original material.

I already have "Beneath the Surface"; I didn't need a second copy. This edition has nothing more from Michael. It has only an unnamed editor's thoughts on the 2012 Olympics part of Michael's swimming career, including a comment about Ryan Locte that I am sure Michael would never have said, let alone authorized to be printed. Shame on Sports Publishing for misleading us into thinking we would be getting something more from Michael Phelps. The add-on isn't anything we didn't already know from reading the sports page during the Olympics.

If you haven't got the first edition of this book, then definitely buy it, but not for content on London, 2012.

It is a handbook!

My first time to read the handbook and I was not disappointed. Coming from a decidedly Democratic household growing up I slowly learned I was being lied to more and more by liberal forces. Actually what is left out is the most damaging. This book brings it home just how bad things have gotten with our media, education system and apparent mental illness of liberal thought. From the real beginning of the country, the civil rights movement, global warming, welfare and most importantly the uniqueness that is America. Too many things to mention and if you want to know the real story on the important topics of our time you need to read this book. I even think the binding is cool.
But this is not for the feint of heart. When I read the real mechanics of partial birth abortion I was first shocked that I did not know. Second I checked it out myself (yes, I even check Phil these days) and third tears came to my eyes and I almost cried. The violent murder of a viable, defenseless baby that just wants to live is the most despicable individual thing I have ever read. And it's legal. People need to be informed and this book is a big step in the right direction.

Lovers separated by deception meet again

Falling in love for the first time is something a woman never forgets, and as much as Beth Prescott wanted to, she couldn't help remembering being head over heels in love with Jake Forrest. But that had been ten years ago.

Now Jake was representing the company that was merging with her own, and Beth knew she was in for trouble. How dared he stir up the painful memories she had put out of her heart long ago?

For Jake was determined to win her back, whether she liked it or not. She was his first love, and she was going to be his last.

I don't usually enjoy cheating books but this one was different. The heroine actually moved on and seemed to have a happier, fuller life then the hero. He made the mistake, she suffered but she got over it and survived. I think this is the only cheating book I have read where the heroine actually did move on and have a successful, meaningful relationship with another man instead of pining for the cheater.

Jake loved Beth but he slept with another woman because he was insecure and allowed himself to be tricked. They had been happy together but he believed she had been with another man and he wanted revenge. He starts a relationship with this woman and flaunts her in front of Beth to hide the fact that he is hurting from Beth's supposed betrayal.

It was so sad to read about Beth's heartbreak when she found Jake in bed with the other woman, especially when she had no idea why he did it. You feel her pain as she looks back and relives seeing him around campus with his new girlfriend, and when she is forced to call him for her father's sake but he is "unavailable" (the reason he was not available was a stomach-churning moment for Beth and for me!!). You also get Jakes perspective, when he realises his mistakes.

When they meet again Beth is a widow. Beth doesn't realise that Jake has spent all their years apart believing she cheated on him, so she can't understand his anger when they meet again. When the truth finally comes out he is stunned and truly remorseful. He wants to make it up to her and start their relationship again but Beth refuses. She was happy with her husband and loved him, she does not trust Jake anymore so he has to fight to get her back.

What I loved most about this book was reading Jakes perspective. This is the best example of a remorseful hero I have ever read. He is sickened when he realises that he is actually the one who cheated on her. He has always loved her and is determined to win her back, however the path to happiness is not always smooth and there are a couple of "unpleasant" surprises waiting for Beth.

This is one of the best cheating hero books out there. The h did not forgive him in two days. He had to work for her forgiveness and it took months! There was no sex, because the h did not trust him and told him so upfront. I loved that the h meet, married and loved someone else. Her husband was not old, impotent or a pshycho. He was a young, good looking, loving rich man! Yay! The h was bitter about what the H did to her and she was not too shy to tell him a few home truths.

This h behaves the way all the other h's in all the other books wish they could react. I wish amazon would have this in kindle format!

I first read this book years ago when it first came out.After reading it,I became a fan of Ginna Grey.I'm so happy to have found it again-after looking EVERYWHERE! The hero & heroine are college lovers who are parted by a bitter rival of the heroine & marries the hero herself.Years later,the heroine has been happlily married & widowed & discovers one of the employees of the company buying out her husband's business is none other than her 1st love.The road to happitly ever after is indeed rocky.You will have to read it to find out what happens to them.I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Great for a Dialogue Between You and Your Child!

I bought this from Amazon and recieved it yesterday when my 4 year old was in preschool. As I skimmed the book I thought to myself that it looked really good but was probably too advanced for her. I was wrong about that. She loved it.

The book discusses 10 ways to soar through life:
1. You're great--no matter what!
2. Persistance pays off!
3. Welcome to the Unknown
4. You have a choice
5. Farewell to worry
6. Peace begins with you
7. Enjoy the Here-and-now
8. Healthy me!
9. Creativity is the key!
10. What can you give.

These principles are each explained on one side of the page. On the other side a situational example of how a child applied it in his or her own way.

The thing my child and I liked most about the book was the section at the end where it asks questions about how the child has or could use each of the 10 principles. I was a bit amazed and delighted by what my daughter shared with me--thing I didn't know about her her life away from me. Her eyes really lit up during this part and she talked a mile a minute.

I'm very pleased with the book written by Wayne Dyer and Kristina Tracy. I have been a fan of Dyer's CD's (based on his books) for some time now which are geared to adults. The illustrations by Stacy Heller Budnick are very eye appealing and cheerful.

I love these positive messages that I can share with my daughter as she grows up and I want to add the first book Dyer wrote for children to her library. Now if only Deepak Chopra would write a few children's books--I'd love that too.

Really, Really Good!

My eight year old daughter suggested the title for this review. We recieved this book as a gift and have so enjoyed reading it together. We have the first book as well...Incredible You. Unstoppable Me is as good, if not better, than the first. My favorite part of both books is the question section at the end. It's a great vehicle for discussion. This book conveys a lovely, positive message for kids and adults alike, and would also be a great teaching tool for teachers of preschool through early elementary.

This is an amazing book. It helps to convey some very necessary messages to our young friends in very easy to understand ways. You can't beat the cute illustrations either! I would tell anyone who wants to help support our next generation to be more in touch with themselves and with the universe to buy this book. WOW!

About the Author
Doug Price is Weinstein Professor of European Archaeology and Director of the Laboratory for Archaeological Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he has been on the faculty for more than 30 years. His current research involves fieldwork on the beginnings of agriculture in Denmark and lab studies using strontium isotopes in human tooth enamel to look at questions of prehistoric migration. He is the author of a number of books and articles on archaeology and has been involved in fieldwork in Ireland, Wisconsin, Michigan, the Netherlands, Peru, Israel, Guatemala, Mexico, and New Mexico. He likes archaeology, children, cooking, football, and the family dog, Bagel. He doesn't like long, self-promoting descriptions of the author of a book.

Gary Feinman is Curator of Mesoamerican Anthropology at The Field Museum in Chicago. He also is an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at both the University of Illinois–Chicago and Northwestern University. Feinman’s current research, which he directs with Linda Nicholas, is focused on understanding the economy and daily life at the time of the Monte Alb�n state in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico. He also is actively involved in a regional settlement pattern project in eastern Shandong Province, China, with colleagues from The Field Museum and Shandong University. Feinman is the author of various books and articles and also has conducted field research in the North American Southwest. He has taught postgraduate classes in Mexico and China. In addition to archaeology, Feinman enjoys sports, hiking, time with family and friends, travel, and communicating science and archaeology to the public through diverse media and means.

Worth it

The book may be expensive but the information with the coloured pages and guides to archaeological record is impeccable. I reference this book for my internship on historical archaeology. the Book also goes into detail of all past cultures around the world.

Arrived on time - saved $$$$$$ for me a struggling student and the book is in great shape. It was stated a few highlighted lines here and there - there are but in reading the material I would have highlighted those lines also. Saved me almost 20 bucks and that's a real help to me and my budget! And yes, I'm almost 81 and a life long learner - plan to die on campus running to class and again....this book is just what I need for Spring semester and the savings makes it even better.

History of Le Cordon Bleu

For over a century, Le Cordon Bleu has been committed to tradition, excellence, and innovation in gastronomy, hospitality, and management.

Through its team of over 80 master chefs, Le Cordon Bleu has passed on to generations of students a respect and legacy of l'art culinaire, the art of cooking, in its Classic Cycle programs in French culinary techniques. These techniques, codified over 300 years ago, are today applied to cuisines worldwide and inspire innovation in the sensorial, economic, technological, and scientific aspects of gastronomy.

What began as a culinary journal in 1895 and then a culinary school in Paris, Le Cordon Bleu programs today are in 35 schools over 5 continents. The entrepreneurial spirit of Le Cordon Bleu extends its range of programs from short courses for culinary enthusiasts to MBA degrees in international hospitality management for industry professionals.

The origin of the expression "Cordon Bleu" comes from the 1578 founding of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Spirit. Symbolizing this was a cross or medal which hung on a blue ribbon or a "cordon bleu." Due to the prestigious nature of this order and the feasts accompanying their ceremonies, the name "cordon bleu" eventually became associated with gastronomy.

Le Cordon Bleu has attracted students from around the world since 1897 and currently hosts students of more than 70 nationalities. After 1945, Le Cordon Bleu was recognized by the US government for professional training of young GIs, one of whom was a former OSS officer by the name of Julia Child.

Le Cordon Bleu has responded to changing trends and demands by the industry by enhancing its programs with new technology and approaches such as molecular gastronomy, virtual training, and the implementation of new training restaurants. With partner universities, Le Cordon Bleu also supports and participates in industry research and development.

Top Ten Culinary Mistakes
  • Choosing recipes that require a level of skill beyond your comfort level. Keep it simple and enjoyable. (Use books and resources that outline step-by-step processes.)
  • Poor time management. Assemble your ingredients in advance (known as mise en place) and review the recipe before you start cooking so that the ingredients are added at the appropriate cooking time.
  • Not evaluating the nutritional value of a menu. A balanced menu is healthier and easier to digest.
  • Not adapting a recipe to seasonal produce. Seasonal produce is readily available and often more affordable.
  • Unsharpened knives and poor equipment. Keep your knives and equipment in good working order.
  • Using a pot or pan that is too large or too small. The proper pan size aids in producing the desired results.
  • Fear of using high heat. Using heat that is too low will encourage sticking, especially with starchy foods.
  • Never use a wet towel to remove a dish from the oven.
  • Piercing meats while cooking. This releases the juices and dries out the meat.

  • Assemble all of your ingredients before you begin cooking (mise en place).
  • Always use a sharp knife. There will be fewer risks for accidents.
  • Apply pressure with your hand to the flat part of the knife blade to crush garlic.
  • When preparing a mirepoix for soups and stews, the vegetables should be cut to the same size and form to ensure even cooking. (Mirepoix is usually onions, celery, carrots, and sometimes green peppers.)
  • To keep herbs fresh, refrigerate them in a damp paper towel.
  • Rub half of a cut lemon on fruits and vegetables to prevent browning.
  • When boiling eggs, add a handful of coarse salt to the boiling water. The eggs will be easier to peel.
  • Save the browned bits of sautéed meats and vegetables from the pan to make gravy.
  • To make perfect whipped cream, make sure that the bowl and beater are cold.
  • Place a dish towel under the bowl when whipping by hand. This keeps the bowl steady and prevents surface scratches.

    I love this book, but get a bit frustrated when a recipe refers me to another recipe book for the first part of the recipe.

    Great recipes, if you have plenty of time for cooking!

    An excellent book, lots of traditional & "classics" recipes, written with much detail & care, but for serious cooks that can spend a few hours in the kitchen.

    The only problem (or advantage, depends how you look at it) is that this is aimed for profesionnal cooks that have plenty of time, ingredients, and utensils in their hands. If you want to study & learn the basics of french cuisine and are ready to invest what it takes, then this is an excellent reference. But be warned that many recipes is written over 1-3 pages (very detailed step-by-step description with the politically correct - french - terms for each procedure). So a solid and generously illustrated reference if you want to learn how real restaurants cook do their trade!

    If you're an amateur and would like to cook "real & serious food" at home, but don't have hours to carefully carve every piece of vegetable and create many stocks, sauces & such, then pick another book. The recipes in this one look delicious, and the book itself is great (lots of photographies, very interesting and relevant text), but I never cooked anything from this book yet (so can't comment on how these taste) simply because it seems that each recipe will take me 3 hours... and I always end up chosing something in another book that looks doable for a weekly dinner.

    Maybe I'll do a coq au vin for my dad's birthday when I have a long weekend ahead? Maybe... Or when I'll retire?

    Systematic and artful approach to French cuisine

    The book,Cuisine Foundations Classic Recipes, is very intuitive with systematic approach to French cuisine. Very convenient with tables and measurement both in US and Metric system. This book is filled with colorful and artistic pictures of each recipe. A great reference book, well worth the money.
