Chinese in Australian Fiction, 1888-1988, by Ouyang Yu

The first Chinese in Australia are said to have arrived as early as 1818, and since then, many more have made Australia their homeland--the current Chinese population is over half a million. It is therefore not surprising that the Chinese are featured in many Australian literary works. This book examines the representation of the Chinese in Australian fiction from 1888 to 1988, with an Author Commentary at the end that provides a brief update on the subsequent fictional representations of the Chinese. It begins with an overview of the Chinese in Australian and Chinese history, followed by a theoretical examination of how the Chinese are made the "Other" by Orientalism, racism, and ethnocentrism. It discusses literary texts written over a period of one hundred years from 1888 to 1988. The study is divided into three major periods of 1888-1901, 1902-1949, and 1950-1988. The first period (1888-1901) deals with the initial attempts to represent the Chinese in fiction as the bad Other by the early Bulletin writers, the Australian responses to the rise of the fear of "the Yellow Peril" in "invasion literature," and the imperialist will to power over the Chinese in writings set in China by Anglo-Australian writers. Apart from pursuing the issue of the continued fear and stereotyping of the Chinese in popular writing, the second period (1902-1949) introduces a new phenomenon of literary Sinophilism that dichotomizes the representation of the Chinese and examines the image of Chinese women. The third period (1950-1988) focuses on the problem of politicisation that polarizes literary attitudes towards the Chinese, and discusses Australia's "Asian writing" as an extension of colonial writing that continues to "Other" the Chinese and explores multicultural writing as an alternative means of representation. This is an important book that illustrates how the "Other" is represented and will be a valuable book for those in Australian studies, Asian studies, and literary studies.

4.5 stars overall
By A Page With A View
NO MAJOR SPOILERS!
This series means SO much to me, but that doesn't mean I'm going to treat it any differently than other books I review honestly. I really didn't think I would give this more than 4 stars until the end totally changed everyyyyyything.

First off, I would absolutely recommend reading The Assassin's Blade before this book if you haven't already! Most characters and locations from those novellas appear here.

The story starts out with Aelin and her court heading north to Terrasen where they meet with a few potential supporters at an inn before trying to waltz into Orynth. Aelin is told that the Lords of Terrasen don't recognize her as queen and it’s all very infuriating. She swears that "no matter how far I go, no matter the cost, when you call for my aid, I will come. I'm going to call in old debts and promises. To raise an army of assassins and thieves and exiles and commoners.” Because war/annihilation is coming and Erawan is not messing around.

So it's kind of like the breaking of the Fellowship in Lord of the Rings with how characters gets scattered around on various missions and eventually come back together. And speaking of LOTR... you know how while everyone freaking walked across Middle Earth the story kind of meandered yet wasn't necessarily boring because the locations sounded pretty, little bits of action popped up here and there, and the characters were so wonderful that you'd be fine reading about them watching paint dry? The middle of this book reminded me of that.

A surprising portion of this story is carried by the POVs of other characters instead of Aelin. That decision makes total sense in the end, but I was initially wondering why I wasn't connecting with her as much as I had in previous books. She spends most of the story making her own secret plans behind the scenes while everyone calls her out on not clueing them in until the continual big reveals. Seeing her through other characters often made her seem a bit distant, callous, not focused on the bigger picture, and pretty much back to her Celaena persona. But by the end it all makes sense and she was still the incredibly brave, determined, selfless, AMAZING character I love. She gets even more complex and mature in this story and her whole journey is perfect.

So that decision to make the development of so many crucial plot points happen off-screen (off-page??) made the reveal at the end more emotional, but also made me kind of frustrated in the middle with how I couldn't get a strong sense of where on earth Aelin’s head was or where the plot was even going. And because we didn't get such a strong look into Aelin's mind, her relationship with Rowan didn't have much emotional impact for me. I love them both as individual characters and do care about them together, but I'm just not as invested as I wanted to be. So I did enjoy this book overall, but wasn’t super emotionally attached like I was in Heir or Fire or flipping through the pages in a panic like I was in Queen of Shadows.

BUT THE CHARACTERS ARE SO AMAZING. All of them. They’ve all grown so much since the first book!!! I said in my reviews of previous books that I wanted to see more of Manon, Aedion, and Elide and I was not let down. The amount of character deveopment that secondary characters get here is AMAZING. So, so, so wonderful. If you thought my love for Manon was intense before, get ready for a whole new level. Her scenes had some of the best action and emotions in the entire book and I was fangirling so much.

Even though my biggest ship sadly did not sail in this book, I still loved where the those characters went. It was just fun to see how everything wove together. And I liked Elide in Queen of Shadows, but can we talk about how she becomes the most amazing & tough character ever here?!! She is SO cool and totally surprised me. Her POV and everything that happened in it was the most unexpected part of the book (and also maybe the best).

This book felt a lot like a chess board… it strengthens every player and moves them into the right position before the final battle of the next book. So it might not be the most gripping story as a whole, but it did an amazing job of building an impressive lineup of characters. Like I NEVER expected to care this much about Lorcan?! I loved how the most unexpected characters paired up for different missions or whatever and how everyone’s different stories wove together at the end! And Maeve just got bumped up past Umbridge level of loathing.

I just love Manon, Elide, Aedion, Lysandra, Dorian… oh my goodness HOW HAVE I NOT TALKED ABOUT DORIAN YET. It made me so happy every time he was referred to as “king” and I love how he’s getting more complex after everything he’s been through. He’s still so adorable. It did irritate me a bit how he’s also an equal king, but Aelin was running the show and kind of ignoring her friend. BUT there was a lot to cover here so I just hope he’s utilized more in the next book.

But seriously, the sheer scope of the worldbuilding in this series is phenomenal. I really can’t think of many other worlds I love this much… I mean, there are demon kings, Fae, witches & wyverns, pirate lords, princes, kingdoms & castles, magic, spirits with cryptic advice, swords & battles, ancient prophecies, politics, well-developed history & religion, multiple complex villains, and it spans all of these continents and cultures. THIS IS EVERYTHING I LOVE.

Now I know that a ton of people were losing their minds over the sex scenes in this book before it was even released, so let me just take a minute to weigh in on that. The main thing I heard about this book was that it was graphic and unnecessary. I’m pretty sure the people calling it graphic didn’t read ACOMAF. (See my review of ACOMAF in response to adults who say it's not for teens). The scenes in this book were tamer and felt like Maas tried to be descriptive, yet still vague with a younger audience in mind? So it mostly ended up being rather awkward… which brings me to the unnecessary point. I’m not against these scenes, but also didn’t really need them in the end. I was either laughing at parts or rolling my eyes at how pretty much everyone turned into a hormonal teenager. It just didn’t fit the tone and honestly felt forced into the story in several places? I defended ACOMAF because the plot built up to those scenes and it meant something in the story, buuuuut I’m really not feeling that here. I honestly would have liked to see the page time used elsewhere…

There are a lot of things I wanted to see happen that didn’t, but I was equally thrilled with where the story ended up going in the end. I think a lot of fans need to acknowledge that even though we’re super wrapped up in this world, it’s not our story to direct. If you need it to go in an alternate direction, maybe go read some fanfiction.

And I adore Chaol, but honestly think cutting him out of this particular book was a really smart move. Based on where his mindset was in Queen of Shadows, he needs time to grapple with who he is and what he wants to do. The tone of his POV would’ve been seriously disconnected from the rest of this story both mentally and distance-wise (like he’s in an entirely different part of the world and wouldn’t have worked into the larger plot). I think it’s enough for the sake of pacing to know what he’s doing without actually having to see it. He’s still awesome and he’ll be back…

Also, I don’t know why Maas said fans would hate her after this book because that ending was AMAZING. (Not amazing in that I particularly enjoy what’s happening, but amazing in that this takes the story to a whole new level of intense. I don’t know if I’d go back and reread this whole story like I usually want to do right after I finish a ToG book, but I’m totally going back to that last 15%.

So even though I connected more with other books in the series, I’d still give it 4.5 stars overall for all of the strong characters and how brilliantly it set up everything. It's possible I was a bit tired or just had too many expectations while reading because the longer that I spend typing this, the more I love the book. There were SO many amazing scenes. And the ending was emotional, but I’m not the wreck I expected to be because I’m mostly too excited at how awesome the next book could be now!

WOW!
By Booklover
Wow. Just wow. That's all I can really say. Like many fans, I waited the whole year for this book to come out and I was not disappointed. Aelin is really starting to come into her own power, abilities, and strategies. But I have to say, the thing I loved the most about this book was the relationships. Maas has really given everyone someone in this book - practically no one is left out of a little love - though, there are a couple relationships that are left with some serious unresolved issues that I am sure will be handled in the next book. Also, no spoilers here, but Maas better find a different way to end this series than the way it hinted at the end of the book with the final reveal. We don't need more main characters becoming martyrs and leaving their true loves high and dry. Nope. I am all about that happily ever after. So it would be great if Maas figures out a way to make that happen, asap.

Things you should know about this book:
1) Contains a cliffhanger, or two, or three - lets just say practically everyone is left hanging off a cliff in this book
2) Contains sex - though I thought it was tastefully done and overdue
3) Contains a whole bunch of Aelin not telling anyone anything until the last moment - that girl needs to work on her communication skills
4) Shows the point of view from: Aelin, Rowan, Aedion, Lysandra, Elide, Lorcan, Manon, and Dorian

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I think it may be one of the best ones yet in the series, although I'm sure the final book will blow our minds out of the water. Happy reading!!!

what they look like, what they sound like
By David Maldonado
I want you to stop for a moment and think about all the characters within the Throne of Glass series, how you perceived them, what they look like, what they sound like, and the decisions they are known to make. Now, throw all of what you know into a blender. Close the lid. Press down on the go button and turn the nozzle all the way up to its highest level. What you are left with is a nourishing and new delightful new dish that our minds weren't ready for. Sarah J Maas turns everything upside down in Empire of Storms, her 5th installment in the series, which has us all scrambling for more immediately.

Maas brilliantly makes each of her characters into something they weren't before. They all develop organically into new people, but these new developments make perfect sense. For example, Aelin begins the book heading North of Terrasen in order to help build herself an army. She finds that the people are not so inclined to back her up, considering she's been gone for over 10 years, but was actually always present with her sworn enemy, the late King of Adarlan, playing as his puppet assassin as Cealena Sardothien. Many don't take too kindly to her history, and many of those that she encounters find more reasons to not back her up, than to do so.

Based on the Aelin we've grown to know, we would think she would blow up into a vengeful tirade, spewing her new found power of fire, stopping close but short of a tyrant. However, that Aelin is not there. She's become ever more calculating, less hot-headed, and deathly more focused on saving her people and land. She not only fights two wars against both the Dark King Erawan and her Aunt Meave, Queen of the Fae, she does more than crosses blades in these wars. She uses her mind as well as her muscle in order to produce an end result she wants. From page one until the very end result, Aelin orchestrated EVERYTHING. It's that type of sleight of hand intellectual reflex that has me blown away with her character growth.

Prince Rowan, once sworn to Queen Mauve, now sworn to Aelin, serves his Queen in every way possible. When we first met him in Heir of Fire he was disassocitive, broody, and not the most likeable character. Aelin has helped to transform him into something more vulnerable, to the point where he will freely show some PDA with Aelin in front of others. While some of his old cadre (old Fae friends/associates sworn to Mauve) would see this as a weakness, this is in fact far from the truth. Prince Rowan will stop at nothing to protect Aelin, even if it means protecting her from herself. He's still a fierce fighter, but now, he has a worthy cause to fight for---a future with his Queen.

Aedion goes through some pretty hefty transformations that mainly deal with things that come out from the plot itself. I won't discuss everything, but Aedion grows to accept who his parents are and what that means. He's every bit as fierce as Aelin can be, and he becomes one of her most loyal soldiers. He also finds a budding romance with a shapeshifter by name of Lysandra. Their relationship was very sensitive, on account of Lysandra's history. She has been defiled by many men, and Aedion is very cautious with her at first, as he should be. Lysandra was a very refreshing character to read about. Her ability to transform into almost anything was pretty epic. Lysandra's fight sequences were some of the best of the series, and she reminded me of a mini Aelin. She's also completely devoted to Aelin, almost to a fault. It's a magical experience to see such a fierce and brutal character, rife with molestation, loss of power, and a dehumanizing childhood, turn into a character that is able to finally allow love to blossom.

King Dorian has the biggest transformation in the entire series. A fair warning to those about to read Empire of Storms, this will not be the same character you grew to love. His innocence is gone. His power is his own. The killing of his father by his own hand, seeing the love of his life Sorscha murdered because of his father, and the months of being held hostage inside his body by a Valg Prince has changed Dorian forever. He is darker, less talkative, and more of a man of action. He has become sadistic and this leads him to a very surprising romance (although I approve) with Manon of Blackbeak. He's become as cold as the ice he wields, and he has now become a force to be reckoned with along side Aelin. He is after all, the King of Andarlan. King Dorian begins to realize the position he is now in, and you see him push his weight around when you least expect it. However, he's very quiet during heightened situations, especially when it comes to plotting along side the other characters. You knew when he decided to speak, his words would change the dynamic. I'm not sure if I personally love his more sadistic side, what I do love is that he recognizes his power. I look forward to seeing how he'll wield it in the future.

Lorcan, another Fae male that's apart of the cadre. Also, the same person who Aelin and Rowan tricked at the end of Queen of Shadows into thinking he took one of the wyrdkeys from them for his Queen. He's known as the Fae male who trained Rowan into what he is now. He's a character filled with vengeful hate, and it becomes amplified 100 fold when he realizes that he was tricked. However, a long his journey he meets Elide who is also on the run. Manon helped her escape her uncle and the tower she was held captive in, and now Lorcan and Elide travel together. To be brief, Elide melts away the ice around his heart, and helps to provide him with a worthier reason to fight. Their romance was the one that had me the most excited, because it really did feel like it was straight out of Beauty and the Beast.

Manon of Blackbeak has the most intense storyline out of them all. I fell in love with her since she was first introduce, and this new installment has just solidified that. Monon, still ever fierce, but we see some major things happen to her. I don't want to give anything away, however I will say that Manon has always known that something wasn't "right" with how her people were living. Some secrets are revealed, some major ties are cut, and we find Manon no longer in a position of power. Until...that is...when she crosses paths with Aelin again.

They're plenty of other characters I can discuss but these are the ones that had the most affect on me. Empire of Storms exceeded my expectations with every aspect of the book. It had the perfect dialogue, right amount of plot twists, and pages upon pages of cinematic fights. The ending will leave you in pieces, as I'm still trying to find all of the pieces of myself. Consider this book a rollercoaster, which has a long death drop and it keeps on dropping even as you turn to the last page. I still haven't reach the bottom yet. And yet, I know I won't until the next book comes out. Sarah J Maas has just written the best in her series, possibly even the best book of her career. Do check it out!

Happy Reading!

Fantastic Book
By Eric Benjamin
Great book that makes the Bible exciting and thought provoking. My child asked us a number of questions about the bible and bible verses. In addition to everything else, it was just a fantastic story. My son (10 years old) could not put it down for two days until he was finished.

He can't wait for the next one! Or the movie!!

Frank Peretti for a younger generation
By Spence Wright
I grew up enjoying Frank Peretti's "This Present Darkness" and "Piercing the Darkness" as books that give insight into the spiritual realm but I've always felt that they are a little too intense and suspenseful for younger readers. Jerel Law has hit a grand slam with this book! First of all, it's a great read. I finished the book in one night! Most importantly though, I was very impressed by the level of spiritual insight that comes through in the book. Finally, something I can recommend to my younger nieces and nephews who are always reading Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books! Well done Jerel!

Amazing book!
By Mark Reynolds
(Review written by my 9-year-old who couldn't put the book down!) I love this book because it's a very good book about good and evil. It has a very good ending with angelic and demonic wars. It talks a lot about God and how He works. It's one of my favorites of all time!

A Les Six Compendium: French Composers Milhaud, Poulenc, Auric, Durey, Honegger, Tailleferre (Peter Owen Modern Classic)From Peter Owen

`Les Six' were Francis Poulenc, Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, and Germaine Tailleferre, all respected in music circles, but under the aegis of Cocteau, they found themselves moving among a whole new milieu. The likes of Picasso, Ren Clair, Blaise Cendrars, and Maurice Chevalier all appear in the story along with key figures of the Dada and Surrealist movements. But the story of Les Six goes on long after the heyday of Bohemian Paris: the group never officially disbanded and their spouses, descendents and associates are still active, ensuring that the remarkable legacy of this unique group survives.

A Thorough History and Analysis
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel
Whenever I attended a concert featuring one the composers comprising Les Six / Group of Six, being Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, George Auric, Louis Durey, and Germaine Talleferre, with "Les Six" being mentioned in program notes, I become curious about why and how such a cluster came about, whether they were assigned that designation by some critic or whether it was more internal. This edited book by music historian and biographer Robert Shapiro, who contributes most of the essays, will answer nearly everything any classical music fan would like to know. All these French composers were indeed chums, and while their particular music differed in experimental or conservative approach, they were dedicated to a new French direction that countered both fuzzy Impressionism and elongated Wagnerian and formal European styles. Most of their pieces at the start tended toward short chamber works. Their godfather was iconoclast Erik Satie and their Muse was Jean Cocteau. The book gives much biographical information along with music analysis. The back material is a treasure trove: besides notes, a chronology, the bibliographical sources, a listing of all their compositions, a thorough discography, a listing of their concerts between 1916 and 2001, and annotated reviews of some old magazine and newspaper articles and published letters describing concerts and premieres. I was already very familiar with Milhaud (who taught at nearby Mills College, where he instructed jazz pianist Dave Brubeck) and enjoyed the wit and charm of Poulenc, but I mainly desired to know more, well, anything about Talleferre. A woman composer in the music world at the time was a rare bird and surely the victim of prejudice. Her story, as the others, is insightful. The interaction and relationships of these musicians amongst themselves and with artists and dramatists and intellectuals are well described by Shapiro. This book will be of interest to classical music fans and historians. It filled a huge gap in my appreciation of these composers.

Robert Shapiro is an accomplished researcher and historian who has become the 'go to' expert regarding the life and times of the French group Les Six. This book is very comprehensive and is a must read for all music lovers. Bravo.

A Textbook Approach
By Peter Baklava
This is as good an overview of "The Six" as you will find, but I still think there are areas where it could be better. On the whole, the book seems to be done up in a "textbook" style, with very dry analysis---which seems odd to me when you are describing musicians who were trying to break away from stereotypes.

I wish the book had given a better picture of the cultural upheaval in Paris near the time of WWI-- which seems to be the point and place where modernism first took hold. There is no discussion of the legacy of The Six, just a pass on that with a few lines about "still being evaluated, yet to be determined..." I know of at least one composer, Martinu, who traced his development to Paris and The Six. There also could have been more about Jean Cocteau and his importance to both the visual and musical arts. Some color-- maybe some paintings from the period---would have been nice. These were colorful composers, but the book is dull black and white.

Most of the readers who seek out this book will probably have their favorites among the number, and mine are Honegger (the 'architect', and the one who created a couple of great 20th century symphonies), and Poulenc (who seemed to be far and away the cleverest, most elegant, melodic, and fun--and was called the "French Prokofiev"--yes, that must be why I love him).

All the major milestones, both musical and historical, are covered scrupulously... for each composer, and the group as a whole. But the best way to understand the group is to listen to the music, of course.... and it wouldn't have hurt for the publishers to have included a representative cd.

Hebrew for the Ears
By William E. Turner Jr.
These two CD's serve as another helpful addition to Zondervan's ever growing original languages library. Pennington again is the "author" who lends his voice to the reading of the Hebrew words and their definitions. It basically follows the same format as his New Testament Greek Vocabulary.
All Hebrews words occurring 20 times and more are given in their descending order of frequency. Pennington also says the alphabet in the beginning and like the NT counterpart there is a 40 page booklet to accompany the CDs. The glosses (definitions) follow Zondervan's Vocabulary Guide for Biblical Hebrew by Van Pelt and Pratico.
The only disappointment which I have so far is that I learned Hebrew using the modern pronunciation whereas Pennington uses the Classical pronunciation. (...)

Well Done
By Kelly D. Kerr
Pennington performs a valuable service to anyone who seeks to learn Hebrew on their own. The vocabulary includes the most common Hebrew words so that the learner will have the maximum benefit of memorization. Each is clearly pronounced enabling the student to recognize similar sounding words, which is important since much Hebrew Scripture relies on word plays and punning. It is a great resource.

this product is good but...
By Rev. VMI
I actually bought the Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary CDs at a book store for full price, should have come to amazon... I am enjoying them and finding that they are extremely helpful. I like that there is a booklet included so that you can distinguish between letters and vowels that may sound alike on the CD. I have found that my knowledge of hebrew words has increased exponentially since starting this program and while I don't quite feel comfortable reading the Hebrew OT, I haven't finished the program yet, I am noticing more and more that I will read my English version and come across words that are likely translations of words that I know.

I believe that these CDs would be a good place to start in your Hebrew education if you want to get into the OT as quickly as possible. I know for me incentives like reading a sentence or passage in Hebrew really keeps me going through some of the most grueling hours of rote memorization. I would suggest for all that are really serious about their study of original texts to start with these CDs and then get a good grammar book to fill in the gaps. Of the five or six Hebrew grammar books that aimless seminary professors have subjected me to 'A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew' by Weingreen is by far the best I have found. He does a great job about explaining not only what the proper grammar is but also why it is.

Now for the negatives about this CD. First, I'm not sure if everyone would consider this a negative or not but he uses the classical pronounciation instead of the modern pronounciation of Hebrew. It is easy enough to switch around in your head but I figure if you are going to go through all the trouble of learning a language that is still spoken today why not learn it in such a way that you can use it on that trip to Israel that you've always wanted to take? Secondly, the CD is helpful for initially learning how to pronounce the words but after that it is just about useless. My suggestion is to get some 3x5 cards cut them into fifths and write the words on there. you can take the flashcards anywhere and they will be easier to prove your comprehension to yourself. It is really helpful, however, that he set these words up in manageable lists according to frequency. Also, I don't feel that he gives you enough time on the CD to think about the meaning of the word before tell you or enough time to go over the word after you get the definition before he starts on the next word. I know I could use the pause button but pausing that gets old fast. I think he probably intends you to write the cards. Lastly, learning a language takes real committment. We are talking between 1-3 hours a day for several months, maybe even years. What a person puts into learning a language is what they will reap from it. I have found so far that every word frequency list has several words that I am either already familiar with or can guess and at least one word that gives me a theological insight into a passage or thought process behind the OT. I think these are gifts from God to help continue on what is sometimes a dry task, but even with these there is still a lot of discipline and committment required in learning the language. Don't fall into the trap of believing that you put the CDs in your car stereo and magically learn Hebrew on your way to work.

This review went on longer than I anticipated so to sum up. Good beginning resource to jump start a life long discipline of study and faithfulness. Take the book and make flashcards, use the CDs to correct pronounciation. Well worth the money. God bless.

By Deremiah *CPE
In the book writing industry there are hoards of books that grab your attention by title. So the question becomes why should you mind? or why should you play with it? --that is your mind-- I mean when it's the only one you've got... why waste time playing "Mind Games"? Are there other things you could do better? You know what I mean. I mean are there other sure fired ways to help your performance with the human brain ...ways other than playing with it? Sure there are many ways to employee your knowledge and plenty of other ways to use life experiences to become more productive. Here you go! Check out this neat little book called "MIND GAMES". It's full of some interesting ways to play with your mind and dozen of other ways to help your brian grow.

I've discovered or uncovered many ways that were once hidden from me all because I stopped to play around with the way I think. You'll be surprised at how much a little playing around with it helps your brian to become open and ready for spontanious growth. You can do this quite easily when you sit down with your favorite drink and read "Mind Games". Oh I like grape juice with a little filtered water in it...what about you?

The human mind is an amazing complex organisim in itself. It really doesn't need our assistance at all. Sometimes a small application is all thats needed. While most people are literally playing with it (and we can tell that they're playing with it by how little they really use it in a controlled way). I think there are many productive ways to use your mind and a great deal many more ways in which you can benefit from reading the simply written, easy to follow exercises in "Mind Games".

"Mind Games" shows you how the brain is laid out. Like an amazing map it has some mind jerking titles that make you want to read the book. It deals with concepts such as

How to win at chess

How to master remembering names or even the telephone directory

Increasing your listening skills

Thinking like a genius

How to feed your Brain

The importance of water toward improving increased thinking.

Developing Mental Toughness

and over 129 other topics that they expound on that reveal major benefits to the mind enthusiast. The subject of Brian Gym is just as interesting as How to be Assertive. One of my most favorite parts of the book was when I stumbled across the subject of how to develop your Listening Skills. Not even you can afford to over look learning new ways that you could improve your skill of listening towards. Well Mind games is a neat little book I'd like to recommend to you. Are you listening? I sure hope you are..because if you're not...think of all the relationships you could make huge improvements in if you were just listening. Thanks for doing that!

Your Servant,

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

By the time psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware reached the school the damage was done: A sniper had opened fire on a crowded playground, but was gunned down before any children were hurt.

“Virtually impossible to put aside until the final horrifying showdown.”—People

While the TV news crews feasted on the scene and Alex began his therapy sessions with the traumatized children, he couldn’t escape the image of a slight teenager clutching an oversized rifle. What was the identity behind the name and face: a would-be assassin, or just another victim beneath an indifferent California sky? Intrigued by a request from the sniper’s father to conduct a “psychological autopsy” of his child, Alex begins to uncover a strange pattern—it is a trail of blood. In the dead sniper’s past was a dark and vicious plot. And in Alex Delaware’s future is the stuff of grown-up nightmares: the face of real human evil.

From Publishers Weekly
After a sniper opens fire at an elementary school in an L.A. suburb, LAPD Detective Milo Sturgis calls in his friend, child psychologist Alex Delaware (seen last in Silent Partner ). None of the children is hurt, but the shooter, a young woman named Holly Burden, is killed by the bodyguard of one of two politicos visiting the school. While helping the kids overcome the trauma of the shooting, Delaware becomes involved with the edgy, dedicated principal, Linda Overstreet. He also agrees to Holly's father's request to do a "psychological autopsy" to clear his daughter's name. As racist-motivated vandalism at the school accelerates, Milo discovers that a black friend of Holly's was recently killed by police; then one of the politicians is gunned down. Alex's life is threatened as he traces events to a revival of the German American Bund and an unexpected political alliance with roots in an explosion of 20 years earlier, echoed in the fiery resolution here. Kellerman's meticulously constructed thriller, while leaning hard on the anti-Semitic component of its plot, again demonstrates how well the role of sleuth fits that of therapist; Alex, a little lost without former girlfriend Robin, speaks with a a unique, convincing voice. 150,000 first printing; Mystery Guild selection; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Kellerman provides his fans with yet another of his exciting tales centered on Dr. Alex Delaware, psychologist/sleuth. Set in California, the book opens with a near massacre in a schoolyard. In this intricately plotted story, the hero is challenged to locate a cleverly disguised villain from a collection of normal and not-so-normal suspects. The rapid pace carries readers into a world of politicians who are more than they seem to be on the surface, families that dysfunction in spectacular ways, and suspicious characters with murky and unusual pasts. In his examination of political extremism, the author touches on an issue that is both timely and thoroughly fascinating. Although the psychoanalytical aspect occasionally becomes a bit overbearing--minor characters using professional-level terminology, for example--the overall effect is engrossing. A minor love theme is played out, and a spectacular and violent climax pulls the disparate threads of the story together. Kellerman's fans won't be disappointed.

Jonathan Kellerman does it again!
By Megan
I got Time Bomb for Christmas and I could not put it down, it was so good, I would stay up late, not wanting to stop. Jonathan Kellerman is the master of psyschological thrillers. Here is a little about the story.
When Alex Delaware gets a call from his friend, LAPD homide detective, Milo Sturgis, he is asked to come down to a school which as been targeted by a sniper, and help the kids. When he gets there, he finds that the details are sketchy and all that he learns is that the sniper has been killed without hurting anyone. Milo tells him that the sniper was a girl, nonviolent, and had mental difficulties. Now, Alex has to figure out, was the sniper a killer, or just another victim?

THE CLOCK IS TICKING.....
By BeatleBangs1964
towards the final detonation! A sniper has just opened fire on a school playground, creating trauma and mayhem. She was shot to death before she could claim any child casualties.

She? Yes. The mysterious woman who opened fire a propos of nothing had secrets begging to be revealed. Dr. Delaware and his sidekick Officer Sturgis travel down some seedy side streets before they unmask the sniper's identity and reason for opening fire. The attacker's father enlists the aid of the duo, requesting that they do a psychological portrait of his slain daughter. As the men delve deeper into their work, they uncover a Pandora's box of ugly secrets and are left with the question of who was REALLY a victim the day of the shooting?

On the plus side, Alex develops a new romantic partner, principal Linda Overstreet. A tough Southwesterner, she provides more class than Robin ever did. She also appears to be much brighter. She has an interesting psychological background including "cops and music." It would have been wonderful if Robin had been ushered out the door for good.

As usual, if there is food, kisses or wine you can find Robin. She makes a brief appearance with deli sandwiches and wine and the requisite kiss. I'm tired of Robin and how she and Dr. Delaware spend the majority of their time involved with food in some form or fashion.

Boring and Pretentious
By Thriller Lover
I've enjoyed other Jonathan Kellerman novels, but I thought TIME BOMB was a real dud. This book is probably twice as long as it needs to be, with endless descriptions and ruminations that add nothing to the plot. Put simply, TIME BOMB is one of those novels that could have used a good editor. This might have been a decent novel if it was 150 pages shorter.

Even worse, there's very little genuine suspense; Alex Delaware faces no danger in this story until maybe the last 80 pages of the book. The plot is also too convulted, to the point of straining credulity. The identities and schemes of the book's villains, for example, are downright ridiculous.

In the end, this novel is a slow-paced bore. In particular, the dialogue in TIME BOMB is very poor and stilted -- too many conversations where characters give long, pretentious speeches instead of talking like real people. I also thought that Delaware came across as pompous and arrogant in many of these scenes, too much of a know-it-all for my tastes.

Kellerman's a very decent writer, but his plotting skills are highly uneven. If you've never tried him before, my advice is to read his earlier novels such as WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS, SILENT PARTNER and OVER THE EDGE. Those novels have better structured plots, and are far more enjoyable reads.
