A good read for persons with beginning knee pain!

After finishing this book, there shouldn't be too many questions left to be answered!. One caveat, however: I quote from the authors Introduction page: "Note that knee surgery referred to here (in the book) is outpatient surgery, namely arthoscopic surgery, not knee replacement surgery." Three years ago I had a total replacement of my left knee with very good results; I now need the same thing done to my right knee. I had purchased the book in anticipation of learning about the "latest and greatest" in knee replacement surgery, which it did not cover. This book is better directed to persons who are just beginning to experience knee pain, and want to learn what they can do about it before a total knee replacement is required.

Great Book for anyone interested in emergency medicine

I am an EMT working toward a degree in nursing or PA. I saw this book being used in the ER at UVA Medical Center and had to have it. It has been a great learning tool for me. I would recomend anyone practicing emergency medicine to add this book to your library.

I am indeed surprised that I am the first person to review this book for America. I am a priest in Scotland and wish to recommend this book to everyone, of all faiths and none. Gerry Hughes dispenses with the 'God who punishes', the God who has been portrayed by mainstream religion for centuries, nay millennia, who wouldn't even make a half decent next door neighbour. This is Christianity with depth - and no place for superstition. If you have ever sat in a church listening to a preacher talking nonsense and wanted to challenge his sermon, read this book. From Dark Ignorance to Light and Knowledge

I recommend this book for every Christian, for every need and for everyone. This book allows you to see into your very soul and deal with its contents on your own with God as help. This book offends the mind but reveals the heart - making it safe to surrender yourself unashamed for help when you see the truth staring you in the face. My bonds were broken when I read this book. My heart was set free to love the God of Surprises, who truly subsequently after reading this book and doing as it says has done Nothing but SURPRISE ME. God is Good. He truly does not condemn us, but He bids us come to Him for that deliverance from hurts, from greed, from unexplained pain, from every destruction that threatens. I found how every pain was meant to be an invitation. Every party has some surprise. So does an invitation to grow in faith. With this book, you learn how to accept an invitation from God.

Overall, this is a good book, with detailed and accurate explanations on methods and what to expect in the exam.
One thing can be improved though - the questions/quizzes. Very small portion of the questions are not really good ones.

Great help for the GMAT

Reading Comprehension is one of the most difficult areas to improve in a short time for the GMAT. If you are not getting good scores in this section and if you've not been a life long reader, then it is not easy to improve your score - it will take hard work and a lot of practice, and probably the Manhattan GMAT RC guide.

This book is definitely one of the best out there for this section. The book offers some radically new tricks and tips to better attack this section (I ended up using a few of them and they were very helpful) and it also has a bunch of practice passages apart from pointers to practice passages from the Official Guide.

I will be reviewing other ManhattanGMAT Prep books individually but here's what I have to say about the entire series - buy them all, it will cost you less than 150 dollars and believe me, it will be money well spent (I scored 760 on my GMAT last month).

A highly recommended first step for Pentateuch study

While certainly profitable to others who do not fit this category, "The Torah Story: An Apprenticeship on the Pentateuch" is a textbook written with the undergraduate Bible student in mind. Its purpose is not to give an in-depth, verse by verse explanation of the Five Books of Moses (for which one should seek a commentary), but is meant instead to give the reader an understanding of how the Torah functions as a self-contained, five-part instructional story which lays a foundation for the rest of the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament) as well as the New Testament. It is written from the perspective of one who is a Christian and who is committed to the Torah as scripture (see p. 13). While this perspective should be obvious, a reading of this textbook will also show that Schnittjer is not afraid to raise difficult issues that come with studying the Torah, even issues he has no intention of answering for the student, nor necessarily always believing there to be such answers at our disposal ("For an apprentice of the scriptures to become skilled at her or his craft, it is necessary to know when to say, 'I do not know.'" p. 68).

As the back-cover description admits, "The Torah Story" only briefly touches on certain matters of debate such as dating and authorship (matters which the Torah apprentice will certainly encounter with further study). Rather, its chief concern is helping the student simply read the text as we have it. For this reason, the first chapter serves not only as an introduction to the textbook, but also as a sort of crash-course in reading biblical narrative. The apprentice will become familiar with older literary terms (cause to effect, climax, contrast, foreshadowing, etc.), be introduced to entirely new ones ("narralogic"), as well as come to appreciate better the relationship which exists (or is meant to exist) between the story and the reader.

After this and a second chapter which introduces the Torah itself, "The Torah Story" is divided into five parts, each part corresponding with the five books which make up the Pentateuch. Part One is comprised of 8 chapters which discuss the book of Genesis, Part Two is 5 chapters on Exodus, Part Three is 4 chapters on Leviticus, Part Four is 4 chapters on Numbers, and Part Five is 5 chapters on Deuteronomy. Following these, a concluding twenty-ninth chapter reintroduces the Torah by giving a broad summary of the entire story (having examined the trees, the forest is then looked at for what it is worth). This chapter also looks at the way the Torah is not only used by later biblical writers, but how it shapes the entire biblical story. In essence, here we have demonstrated how both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament can only be properly understood when placed within the context of the Torah story.

Each chapter assists the reader by opening with a "Getting Started" box including focus questions and terms which relate to that chapter, and an outline of the portion of the biblical text the chapter is concerned with. Each chapter also closes with an "Interactive Workshop" consisting of a chapter summary and questions for the beginning and advanced student, as well as suggested research project ideas and a select bibliography for those who wish to take "the next step" toward a deeper study of the things only touched on in the chapter. In addition, certain chapters also provide opportunity for the student to compare stories and themes found within the Torah with similar stories and themes found in our own culture, particularly in film. For example, following a look at the perspective of God's creation as found in Genesis 1, the reader is invited to compare this perspective with that found in the 1997 film "Contact" (see pp. 63, 71). These aides and opportunities for further study are what set "The Torah Story" apart from other introductions to the Pentateuch, making it a textbook ideal for today's undergraduate class and individual student.

Great Read

I have read the Bible five times straight through and find myself reading it again thanks to Dr. Schnittjer's excellent textbook. Written for the Bible scholar, it is readable by the average student and will inspire those readers to dig into the Torah like no other book I have read. It is honest in its approach and thoroughly enjoyable. It will challenge and stretch the reader. The exercises at the end of each chapter and the guide points throughout each chapter stimulate learning and comprehension. This is a must read for anyone interested in the foundational chapters of the Bible. If you are not an apprentice when you begin this book, you will be by the time you have finished it.

This book is simply amazing. It is in a textbook format, but that makes it an easy read even if you are not taking an Old Testament History class. Dr. Schnittjer is well versed in OT History and Hebrew, so this book was a perfect fit for him, and he geared it to his students and their peers, not his colleagues. This book is very helpful!

Jon Balserak is Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies at the University of Bristol. He has published numerous scholarly articles on John Calvin and the Calvinist and Reformed tradition. He has written or edited four books including Divinity Compromised; A Study of Divine Accommodation in the Thought of John Calvin (Springer, 2006), Calvinus Evangelii Propugnator; Calvin, Champion of the Gospel (ed., Calvin Studies Society, 2006), Establishing the Remnant Church in France; John Calvin's Lectures on the Minor Prophets, 1556-1559 (Brill, 2011), and John Calvin as Sixteenth Century Prophet (OUP, 2014).

An Indispensable Facet of The E.B. White Legend

The Second Tree From The Corner, E. B. White; Harper & Brothers various copyrights, 1935-54)

Somehow, this book didn't surface until this year, in a book store on Deer Isle, ME - decades after I had first learned about & became entranced with the writings of E. B. White.

TSC is a slim volume, but there's nothing shy or retiring about its impact, which is tremendous, if you will give it a chance.

When you see the "social media" zombies in the streets - staring vacantly at electronic gossip, oblivious to all else (& leery of actually meeting "friends" in person), remember that their grandparents were children at about the time that Mr. White wrote this, in the 1950s:

"Television was the ultimate peepshow... Children early formed the habit of gaining all their images at second hand, by looking at a screen; they grew up believing that anything perceived directly was vaguely fraudulent. Only what had been touched with electronics was valid & real."

And thus our gradual debasement began, which is now complete.

Vintage E. B. White Timeless

E. B. White rarely lets one down and not one piece in this collection -- however dated -- misses a beat. The title essay is worth the price of the entire volume. I am a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and teacher, and at the final meeting of my (required) weekly case seminar each year I read "The Second Tree from the Corner" to my residents. I want them to have a view of our "impossible profession" from the consumer's angle, and this rendering of such a perspective manages to be profound, inane and touching all in one.

E. B. White is such a good soul. He writes for the reader who "gets it," that reflective seeker who sees deeply into the human condition, takes comfort in this vision, is disinclined to crow about it and would spend good hours with others of like kind. A good soul and good company.

Another wonderful E.B. White book

Loved it. The best parts for me were the letters to the IRS & the Humane Society. Had me laughing loudly. I adore E.B. White's sense of humor and his writing is SO good. I find myself reading one of his books, then finishing and reading a few others, but sometimes while reading the others I'm thinking about E.B. White and how much I love his writing. I'm always looking forward to opening up another one of his books when I'm done with whatever I'm reading.

Fun History

Seems like a fun book. I read a review of it in the LA Times and bought it for my son for Father's Day this year. He wears goofy socks to work even when he has on a suit and tie. I love it. I wish I could have bought the socks form the front of the book.
