The best book I have found for pure Inventory Mgt:

For my line of work, which is strictly in support of inventory management, in a large organization, this book is the best and most comprehensive reference I have found for inventory management. Other references, such as Chopra's or Shapiro's, offer an excellent survey in the broader topic of supply chain management but do not approach the depth of this text in straight inventory management. For the person working in a large organization, in which supply chain management is broken up across large numbers of people and departments, and for whom inventory management is the main focus, then this is the book for such an individual.
The particular strength of this book lies in chapters 5 - 10 in which a very comprehensive analysis is placed on the topics of reorder quantity (Eoq) and the large array of optimization and inventory control techniques in the realm of re-order point, order-up-to logic etc. This text covers classic Eoq analysis, along with the alternative heuristic methods for items displaying an uneven rate of demand. The approach to setting re-order point rules for slow-selling, as opposed to fast-moving items, receives ample coverage. No other book I have seen covers the issue of slow-moving items as well, which is significant since in industry many items are slow movers.
The authors cover the concepts of "exchange curves" and how one can link inventory control objectives at the item level to an aggregate level. This is a critical concept for the practitioner attempting to reconcile item-level inventory control to aggregate inventory and financial planning objectives.
The forecasting section itself offers substantial treatment of the topic though additional depth, such as with an addtional chapter, would improve this book. Perhaps forecasting will receive greater treatment in a future edition.
Also of value is the overall approach to the topic of inventory control, starting with forecasting, then re-order quantity, and then re-order point rules. Also, there are valuable insights to help the practitioner "draw the line" between a fast-moving item and a slow-moving item and specific direction on the inventory control policies to pursue with both classes of inventory. Relatedly, there is excellent discussion on the rules one can apply to approach inventory management with eiter the normal distribution of demand versus when other distributions of demand may apply for slow-moving items. Books such a Chopra's do not give this critical topic the same level of attention.
Mathematical topics and formulas are presented in a manner which should be accessible and substantial for individuals with a wide degree of quantitative backgrounds. The topics are presented with a good degree of detail, rigorous yet still in well-defined sections. The book's construction supports in-depth study in addition to quick reference. References and citations of other work abound for those who wish to explore a topic further.
The Chopra or Shapiro or Simch-Levi or Factory Physics texts cover the topic of variability pooling, two tier systems, and the "bullwhip effect" more successfully than this book.
I have not used the second section of this book which deals with production planning so I will not speak to the quality of its content in these areas.
If I had to choose one text for an inventory management text it would be this one. Though given a choice I have also supplemented it with addtional texts such as Chopra's, Shapiro's and the "Factory Physics" book.

Great explaination but Need more quantitative analysis

This book is comprehensive and very good for introduction to Inventory mgt and production planning but need more quantitative analysis, for instance, math model or algorithm to solve the problems. If you want the real inventory modeling, please choose Johnson and Montgomery book(ISBN 0471446181). Otherwise, this book is great.

Best book on inventory management

Without any doubt, Silver/Pike/Peterson is the best and most comprehensive book on inventory management. If you are searching for simplistic "management consultant concepts" then buy something else. If you want to learn how realize all these basic concepts take this book. Seriously, what are people exspecting: "too technical" ? Stupid. If you do not have any clue about basic math, why do you wanna go into logistics?

If I should teach somebody on logistics I would gave him or her one of the (thousands) books on simplistic powerpoint-like SCM concepts (if you want read Silver/Pike/Peterson you have to know these concepts beforehand). And when the question arises how to put this into practice, I would give this person the Silver/Pike/Peterson book. In the end, standard concepts are not enough. You need math. And Silver/Pike/Peterson only gives you a brief introduction about the basic math. Thus, alltogether the result will answer the question: how to run operations at the bottom line of the industry. Of course for becoming supply chain champion the book will not offer "the perfect master plan" but Silver/Pike/Peterson will give you the basic knowledge to generate such knowledge.

About the Author

David K. Hayes, Ph.D. has over 35 years of experience in the field of hospitality management and education. Dr. Hayes initiated the hospitality management program at Texas Tech University. He has held faculty positions at Purdue University and the University of Houston’s Conrad Hilton College of Hotel Administration; as well as the position of Vice President of the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). In 2005, Dr. Hayes formed Panda Professionals Hospitality Management and Training, (www.pandapros.com); a training resources company that develops customized hospitality education-related computer simulations, print publications, and seminars. Dr. Hayes is a prolific author, having published over a dozen textbooks, including versions translated into Chinese, Portuguese, Croatian and Spanish. In addition to his Ph.D., Dr. Hayes earned the hospitality industry certification of Food Management Professional (FMP) from the National Restaurant Association (NRA) where he has served as a consultant on the ManageFirst program. He also has earned the Certified Food and Beverage Executive (CFBE) and Certified Hospitality Administrator (CHA) designations from the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Dr. Hayes received his Bachelor of Science (BS), and Masters of Science (MS), degrees in Hospitality Management and his Ph.D. degree in Educational Administration from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.

90-Day Quick Plan
Eighteen years ago a man challenged me to not complain for 90 days straight. I couldn't complain about anything, not food, not the weather, nothing. That changed my life. Some people say you can change a habit in 21 days. I question whether that is long enough. While 21 days may be too short, an entire year is too long. Think about it, most people can't keep their New Year's resolutions for even two weeks. People often think, “I have all year to get going on that.” 90 days is a sweet spot. It is a short enough time frame to stay absolutely focused, and yet it is long enough to get more done than most people get done in a whole year. When I lost my weight, the first 90 days were the most important. In those three months, I lost thirty-three pounds, but more importantly, my thinking about food, exercise, and how I spent my time was transformed. Everything changed in 90 days.

Most strategic planning is done at an off-site retreat, yet provides little momentum toward action. Instead of an annual planning session, try making a 90-Day Quick Plan. Every 90 days we encourage everyone on our team to create a 90-Day Quick Plan. It gives leaders and teams an actionable framework that provides clarity and leads to tangible results both personally and professionally.

Here's how to make it work. Pick an area of your business or life that you'd like to address, and then ask six questions. The plan should take less than 30 minutes to create.

Question 1: Where am I? If you do not know where you are today, you cannot know where you would like to be in the future. (If you are doing a 90-Day Quick Plan as a team, ask, “Where are we?” and use “we” in the following questions as well.) Ask this question and you will be able to quickly identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. For example, where am I in my relationship with my kids? Where am I in my health? Where am I in comparison to expected sales? Where are we as far as the number of people we are reaching with our message or product?

Question 2: Where am I going in 90 days? Remember, it is not one year or five years like many strategic plans. Thinking about your answer in question 1, where would you like to be in 90 days? Write a clear, quantifiable (numerical if possible) goal. You will likely accomplish more than you thought in just 90 days!

Question 3: Why am I going? If the “why” is strong enough, the plan does not need to be perfect. If a building is burning and my kids are in it, I don't need to know every detail—I'm going in because my “why” is so strong. When your team is motivated and unified, they'll do the little things differently. They'll stay passionate and focused, and they'll finish.

Question 4: How are we going to get there? How? Keep asking how? until your team commits to taking specific actions.

Question 5: How are we going to get there? I press people to ask how? until they have come up with a specific action they will take starting today or tomorrow at the latest.

Question 6: How are we going to get there? I have found people must ask how? at least three times before they are clear enough. It may take asking how? seven times in order to get enough clarity. The point is don't stop asking how until you or your team has decided on a specific action that will be taken starting today or tomorrow.

Making It Happen
I remember when I really got this idea of asking “how?” three times. I was training and consulting with one of the biggest heath care organizations in North America. They needed change! They were losing funding and patients. We were toward the end of our Trust Edge Experience. One hundred fifty top people including the CEO and senior leadership team were all seated at round tables. Each table had defined a specific challenge they were going to tackle. I remember asking one table full of top leaders about what they needed to take action on in order to grow and be more trusted. The table leader said, “We need to be clearer.”

I said, “How will you be clearer?”

After brainstorming with his group, the table leader said, “We are going to communicate more.”

I said, “How?”

After more brainstorming, he said, “We are going to hold each other accountable.”

I said, “How?”

The table, seated with bright minds and fine leaders, had to be pushed three times in order to realize they needed a more specific action plan. They worked together to create a plan for communicating more often and more clearly. An important piece of their plan was how they were going to hold each other accountable to this effort. They were able to start following their plan the very next day.

On a personal level, when I decided to lose weight, I kept asking “how?” until I went from “eat less and exercise more” to defining fifteen specific actionable ideas I could implement on a daily basis.

This book is for all those who didn't have / make the time to read David Allen's Getting Things Done or did so and loved the philosophy but now need simple actionable steps to improve their productivity.

This book is packed with 35 productivity tips and is a must read for anyone wanting to get more out of their day while maintaining relationships and increasing Trust! The 90 Day Quick plan and DMA strategies alone (Tips 1 & 2) would make this book worth the price. Keep reading and you will find actionable strategy after actionable strategy...

Good tips! Quick read!

As the saying goes, "there's nothing new under the sun", so don't expect this book to be filled to the brim with undiscovered tips. However it is a good mix of new twists on things that may be familiar concepts and reminders of things we know we should be doing but aren't.

Horsager has developed some ideas as to how to get started applying the Trust Edge daily. Although, the strategies are simple they don't always apply to the business I'm in. But there were some 'take-a-ways' that I could modify, to fit my needs.

Glaeser�s academic specialty, urban economics, informs his survey of how cities around the world thrive and wither. Using a range of expository forms�history, biography, economic research, and personal story�he defines what makes a city successful. That changes through time, and a flourishing Industrial Age model may not work in the service-age economy, as rust-belt towns like Detroit have learned. One thing constantly attracts people to one city rather than another�how much housing construction is permitted. Restrictive places, such as New York City, coastal California, and Paris, have a tight housing supply with prices only the wealthy can afford. Hence, middle-class people move to the suburbs or cities like Houston. About the Author
Edward L. Glaeser is the Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He studies the economics of cities, housing, segregation, obesity, crime, innovation and other subjects, and writes about many of these issues for Economix. He serves as the director of the Taubman Center for State and Local Government and the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston. He is also a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1992.

Meh - Padded, Wandering, Unfocused

This is a book I thought I would love, but as I read it I began wishing there was another, tighter, more focused book I could be reading.

The book is pacted with factoids, most of the post hoc ergo propter hoc type, but, for me at least, it doesn't really gel as a convincing, connected argument. There are points made that make sense - some cities have a lot of poverty because they attract poor people seeking opportunity, cities with diverse economic bases are less susceptible to an economic shock linked to the decline of single industry, it's good for cities to have strong educational institutions, that London is a fun place helps make it attractive as a place to live for skilled professionals, skyscrapers are an efficient way to house businesses and people, there are still advantages to be had in close physical proximity. Some of these points are old hat; some are relatively fresh and even against the received wisdom.

For an awful lot of these points, though, the ultimate response is: So What? The whole seemed like a lot less than the sum of the parts. The experience was less like reading a focused essay than browsing through Google news or an RSS feed on cities - a lot of information, somewhat organized, but nothing like an actionable vision. At times the data triumphantly trotted out was inconsistent (Silicon Valley succeeds as a kind of city, dispersed into office parks thought it be; Route 128 failed because being dispersed into office parks as it is it lacked the physical connections of a true city). At times, it fails to grapple with the implications of the obvious (yes, the theater in London or New York is great, but the seats are often filled with tourists because the locals are too busy working to make it). More often, the arguments make a kind of superficial sense (when the big three went down in Detroit, the economic monoculture built up around cars was incapable of spawning replacement industries) but seem less clear upon reflection (why could none of the thousands of supplier firms, from ad agencies to banks to muffler makers to makers of industrial robots, that clustered around Detroit migrate into new businesses? Surely there were opportunities for these suppliers outside the auto industry, so we are left wondering).

He makes the point, surely a valid one, that cities are ultimately about people, not structures, but doesn't deal adequately with the nuances and subtleties of the institutions and social structures that draw people to cities and keep them there. It requires way more than observing that London has good theater and excellent restaurants to explain why people and businesses cluster there, as they do, despite the expense and the awful climate.

Living in a new (30 years) city of 15 million people, next to an older (150 years) city of 10 million that has been totally transformed in the past fifty years, has made me very interested in what makes cities grow and become great. From this book, I got a lot of factoids and references to other people's work. If Glaeser has a synthesized vision, it's lost in the flood of seemingly unconnected data (or perhaps the decision was made to serve up a low fiber buffet of canapes for a mass audience instead of really working through things for those willing to think it through). It's not an awful book, but given Glaeser's academic work and background it is so much less than it could be.

The Growth of the Nation Depends on Cities

Producing a comprehensive and entertaining book on cities' value to society requires a scholar with a lifelong urban devotion whose background and skills cut across traditional social science disciplines. Fortunately, the world has Ed Glaeser. Each of Glaeser's chapters seamlessly blends historical narrative, present day travelogue, history of urban thought, rigorous empirical research, and policy prescription. By presenting each of these well, he produces a convincing polemic. As more academic economists begin to popularize their research, Glaeser is distinguished in both the quality of his scholarship and the importance of his subject to society.

Much of Glaeser's work is refuting conventional wisdom against cities: we learn urban life can be green, skyscrapers need not destroy local character, congestion ills can be solved, and inner-city education need not be dreadful. Glaeser does not have all the answers to the problems he addresses, and occasionally his arguments are weak. But what fun is reading about a subject with nothing left to debate?

Glaeser is most convincing on one central policy theme: inept government makes urban living less accessible than it should be. These policies include overzealous historical preservation and height limits, subsidization of home ownership and auto travel, oversupply of public infrastructure, various forms of NIMBYism, and the more complex failures surrounding urban education. These issues touched Glaeser deeply as the tilted landscape led him to pick suburban life for his own children.

The book's subtitle could use clarification. Glaeser is not arguing that everyone will be happier in cities. He is not merely trying to impose nostalgia for his NYC upbringing on the world: as he says, "one's own tastes are rarely a sound basis for public policy." Glaeser's urban advocacy is evidence-based. Cities are the incubators for economic growth, and throughout history the innovation arising from cities has improved standard of living even for those choosing to avoid them.

Three Books for the Price of One

This is two really wonderful books and one less wonderful book all wrapped into one.

The first book, which is terrific, is a brisk and accessible tour through a series of real-life experiments deeply grounded in data: "A study of corruption in Indonesia found that the stock prices of companies whose leaders stood closest to that country's dictator in photographs suffered most when the leader fell ill."

More: "When American cities have built new rapid-transit stops over the last thirty years, poverty rates have generally increased near those stops." It's not that transit stops cause poverty, he explains; rather, poor people value being able to get to work without the expense of owning a car.

That insight, like many of those mentioned by Professor Glaeser, bears on the main topic of his book, the economics of cities. The author proves useful as a guide to the research of others as well as in conveying his own thoughts. "Nathaniel Baum-Snow, a Brown University economist, has calculated that each new highway passing through a central city reduces its population by about 18 percent." And, "Dartmouth economist Bruce Sacerdote found that children displaced from New Orleans by Katrina had a significant improvement in their test scores. He found the biggest beneficiaries of the exodus were children from poorly performing schools who left the New Orleans area altogether." It's the counterintuitive nature of these insights that makes them particularly delicious -- that expensive highway project that the local congressman fought to get funded turns out to be bad for his city, and Hurricane Katrina turns out to have been a good thing for the education of its "victims."

The second excellent book within Triumph of a City documents the way that regulations prevent cities from accommodating the needs of people. "Too much preservation stops cities from providing newer, taller, better buildings for their inhabitants," he writes.

Historic preservation laws are just one part of a set of barriers to building that also includes zoning, environmental laws, and government approval processes. "Over the past forty years, we've experienced a little-remarked revolution in property rights in America," Professor Glaeser writes. "We have gone from a system wherein people could essentially do what they wanted with their own property to a system wherein neighbors have enormous power to restrict growth and change."

The strength of the first two books makes the weakness of the third book contained within Triumph of the City all the more disappointing. This third book-within-a-book consists of a series of left-wing assumptions.

The problems of cities, Professor Glaeser insists, won't be solved by "mindlessly relying on the free market." In fact, he says, "there's no free-market solution for the great urban problem facing slums....Cities desperately need forceful, capable governments to provide clean water." He doesn't mention that here in America, private water systems produce 4.6 billion gallons of water a day, or about 1.7 trillion gallons per year. Or that the private drinking water business is a $4.3 billion per year business, with at least 12 publicly traded companies among the players (more if you count bottled water).

Professor Glaeser has a strange crush on the French school system. "If America imitated the best aspect of European socialism and invested enough in public schools so that they were all good, then there would be little reason for the rich to leave cities to get better schooling," he writes. Later, he repeats, "If the United States emulated France and embraced nationwide quality schooling funded by the state, there would be less reason to flee urban areas."

In fact the 2009 results from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's Program for International Student Assessment, which studies 15-year-olds, found that America outperformed France in reading and science. France did better than America in math, but is that a reason for America to emulate or embrace an educational system that in two of three categories measured produced worse results than ours? The latest UNESCO statistics also show that the United States outspent France on primary education, as measured by annual public expenditure per primary student as a percentage of GDP per capita.

The sections devoted to global warming veer into self-righteousness. "Anyone who believes that global warming is a real danger should see dense urban living as part of the solution....The polar ice caps appear to be melting quickly and threatening seaside cities from New York to Hong Kong with the prospect of severe flooding," he writes. "For the sake of humanity and our planet, cities are -- and must be -- the wave of the future."

It's not just cities that Professor Glaeser has in mind for his project of saving "humanity and our planet" but also taxes. "Current U.S. gas taxes are too low," he insists. "Throughout the world, we can adopt a global emissions tax that charges people for the damage done by their carbon emissions. The actual size of the tax needs to be worked out by the experts...."

Toward the end of the book, he writes, in arguing for more stimulus spending to be directed at cities: "The five least dense states managed to sit out the recession with an average unemployment rate of 6.4 percent, as of December 2009." For a book whose whole argument is "the power of proximity" in cities to create wealth, jobs, and growth, that's a fact that undercuts the author's argument, and one wishes Professor Glaeser would at least try to explain it. He does not.

Professor Glaeser is also not always as clear as one would wish in terms of his definition of a city. Is it the whole metropolitan statistical area, or just what lies within the municipal boundaries? Sometimes cities and suburbs have similar characteristics in terms of density, they just lie on opposite sides of political boundaries. If cities make us "richer, smarter, greener, healthier, and happier," as the book's subtitle claims, would just expanding some political boundaries help? Or is density all that is required, and, if so, why aren't dense suburbs just as good as cities?

Professor Glaeser himself, who grew up in Manhattan, moved his family to the suburbs of Boston, a decision about which in the book he expresses a certain amount of ambivalence and, perhaps even guilt. He seems to want an increased gas tax and a lower home mortgage tax deduction to make it more cost-sensible for him to live in the city, but those may strike Americans who don't share Mr. Glaeser's taste for cities as high prices to impose.

A very lovely book

I am new to Milanese Lace. When I saw this book available on Kindle I decided to purchase it. I'm not sure if this format was a wise decision. I think the size of the patterns will be off whereas
in book format the patterns would be the appropriate size.
I do love the book. It is beautiful, with such lovely photos of Milanese. I hope someday to gain the skills to make a few of them. This book is an inspiration to anyone who creates this beautiful lace. Patricia Read is an incredible artist.

excellent early book on sample size determination, prepared with researchers from the behavioral sciences in mind

In the design of clinical trials particularly in the regulatory environment of the FDA the determination of the appropriate number of subjects to recruit for a well-powered statistical hypothesis test ot tests is extremely important. This topic is often neglected in statistical texts, even the elementary ones. It has also been neglected in many of the statistical software products that are available. Recognizing this need Janet Elashoff and Ralph o'Brien were among the first to construct tools for sample size determination and calculation of statistical power. There are now many software products available including nQuery Advisor (Janet Elashoff's product), Power and Precision, PASS, and StatXact. For group sequential and adaptive design methods thare are products such as East, PEST, SeqTrial+ and ADDPLAN to mention a few. Ralph O'Brien's package has now been modified and implimented in SAS with the procedures PROC Power and PROC Glmpower.

This book by Jacob Cohen preceded these developments and became a classic reference for researchers particularly those in the social sciences including behavioral scientists as mentioned in the title. I know of only one other competing book from that time period that being "How Many Subjects" by Helen Kraemer of Stanford University.

The Definitive Power Analysis Text

Cohen does a masterful job of taking the guesswork out of statistical power estimation. This text provides procedural guidelines for determining power for many designs, and can be quite helpful in determining proper sample sizes. Not for the casual reader, but a necessary addition to any serious researchers statistical library.

Adrian Rogers recently passed away, and with him, some of the finest teaching skills in Christendom.

His Revelation is one of the best books on the subject. His strength is talking to the reader--not at the reader.

If you want Revelation in-depth, you might seek out "Revelation for the Complete Idiot". If you want a scholarly work, read Mounce.

If you want a teenager-oriented (or brand new believer, or teacher) book on Revelation, there is nothing better than: "Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs!" by Jerry L. Parks.

But if you want a conversational-style commentary--one with wonderful alliteration (which Rogers was the best at!) look no further than this book. You will not be disappointed!

A Satisfying Unveiling, Indeed

The book lives up to its title. Dr. Rogers unveils for us a portrait of Jesus Christ in the book of Revelation which is so different from the Gospels, the Epistles or the Old Testament. We are familiar with Jesus Christ as he was presented in the Gospels as a meek and lowly Lamb which takes the sin of the world: and that is crucial. But to be content with that picture of Christ is to deny the Bible's whole teaching about the person of Jesus Christ. The book of Revelation as Dr. Rogers explains it lifts up Christ to the glory and majesty he truly deserves.
Once you read this book, you will disabuse yourself of the fear and trepidation about the Great Tribulation and instead, you will see and know Jesus Christ in a different light. Reading this book is like holding up a diamond to the light to see all of its beautiful facets. Read and study the Old Testament to see the richness of the promise of Christ as Messiah; read the Gospels to know Christ as Savior; read the Epistles to know Christ as Lord; but read this book to understand the Revelation of Christ as Judge and King.
This book is truly uplifting. The message of the book will fill you with hope and with expectation of meeting Jesus Christ when he comes in his glory! Hallelujah!
