Momentum Trading Systems

Having read "Adaptive Analysis" by Nick Radge a couple of years ago I was eager to purchase his latest book "Unholy Grails" and I am very happy that I did. The main focus of this book is about how to outperform buy and hold with the use of a robust fully tested trend following strategy that has a positive expectancy. Each system is clearly explained so that the reader has a full understanding of how it works and why it works. Each strategy has been robustly tested to ensure that they will operate in varying market conditions. The full test results for each system are clearly laid out in the book. These results include the CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate), Maximum Drawdown, MAR, Exposure, Number of transactions, Win %, Win/ Loss Ratio, Standard Deviation, and the Sharpe Ratio. Some of the other topics covered in this book include the use of price, volume and turnover filters, selecting a test universe, optimisation and also the psychological side to trading.

Near the end of the book Nick interviews several successful traders about the trading systems that they manage. The interviews are quite in depth and give the reader a good understanding of what it's like as a trader.

In summary this is easily the best trading book that I have read. Instead of just rehashing old ideas and offering very little like the majority of trading books that I have read, this book really delivers. It actually helps when it's written by a trader.

Trend Following Systems Explained

Most new traders generally go looking for the holy grail of trading. That system that just prints money, they believe it exists and will look relentlessly for it. However there is no holy grail of trading. The closest thing a trader can get to a holy grail in trading is a robust mechanical trend following system with limited draw downs that the trader can deal with without emotions causing them to over ride the system.

Nick Radge as written a great book on this very topic `Unholy Grails', this is a great addition to any trend following trader's library regardless of your specific method for trend following. What Nick does is take the reader through how he builds mechanical trend following systems that beat the market. His momentum based strategies are based primarily on catching a market wave and riding it for over sized profits. Not through predictions but through back tested mechanical systematic strategies based on momentum that have historically been shown to beat the market during a trend and over the long term. In between these trends the system is designed to limit equity draw downs by automatically stopping out of losing trades when certain parameters are hit. His key message in the book is to create a system based both on simplicity and robustness. His systems allocate the investors account into 20 equal increments to manage risk without diluting returns.

He measures his systems through the metrics of return, risk, and also reliability. Nick does a great job of giving the reader charts demonstrating the historical equity curves of both profits in dollars and percentage of equity draw downs during markets that are not conducive to profits. Nick has placed charts in the book showing the returns of each system year by year based on historical information using the systems entry and exit metrics for its watch list.

Nick has some excellent interviews with very successful traders in the back of the book and how they successfully manage their trading systems in real accounts with real money. He also covers the misconceptions about trend following traders and explains the truth about what they do.

This is just an excellent addition to trend following literature and is a perfect complement to Michael Covel's writings. I highly recommend.

The reality of mechanical trading

The reality of this book is somewhat shocking. I cant remember having ever read a book which explains various trading systems in detail and includes the statistical harsh downside and the always sort after upside. I will not detail the book section by section as previous reviewers have done this quite nicely. But there is no doubt the "real life" context in which Radge has explained mechanical trading is to be commended. After reading this book you are not left feeling high nor low - but rather grounded on the topic with a intimate understanding that with hard work profits are to be found.

Admittedly you will need a good test platform and will need to be reasonably fluent in high level programming language to put these types of systems into action but i believe anyone who is interested in mechanical trading systems would already have a good understanding of the tool kit required to backtest/code etc.

The tool kit aside, the angle from which Radge approaches this topic is well thought out - not overwhelming the reader and this ensures you make it through the entire book.

Simplicity truly is the ultimate sophistication.

Jover-Ledesma, LL.B., LL.M. (Taxation), CPA, is the principal of CPATAX SERVICES, INC., a tax, accounting and consulting firm. Ms. Jover-Ledesma specializes in federal, estate and international taxation. She is a licensed CPA in Illinois. Her practice also includes audit, accounting and wealth planning. She is currently an Adjunct Faculty at Harper College, Illinois. Ms. Jover-Ledesma earned her degrees in accounting and law from the University of the Philippines and her master's degree in law in taxation from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology.

DO NOT BUY!

DO NOT BUY from this seller. Poor communication and painful return process. you'll have to pay extra $$ for shipping both way. Few hours after I placed in order, my instrutor annouced that we did not need this book for the course, so I emailed this seller right after, more than two times, prior of shipping to cancel while the order still marked as "Not Yet Ship", but he/she failed to respond. A week later he/she shipped the book out to me anyway. When it arived, the condition of the book WAS NOT as advertised on Amazon; it had severely water damaged more than 1/2 of the book. I requested for return, and it is a long, painful process. ONE star is more than needed. Bottom line - DO NOT BUY!

yes, you can be the puppet master

This does not feel like a computer book. Focal Press has put out many books on video gaming and on film production, and if you are reading this, you might have a background in programming video games. But the book doesn't have a line of code. Instead it is a testament to the evolution and current sophistication of this field. From the start, it focuses on the story telling. Not unlike a traditional book on writing screenplays. We have moved away from the low level details of how to draw and animate a character. Books on those were primarily about the graphics; because that was what you mostly had to master.

What you can do with this book is read it as a good summary of the different popular video games of 2010-11. The authors do a comparative analysis at the plot level. Accompanied by extensive explanations of how to classify games.

But you can see important differences with writing screenplays. In some video games, you can have multiple endings, that depend on how the player does. And of course, a game is an interactive process. Quite unlike watching a play or film. This ability to branch a story into several lines, and perhaps have some merge if the player does certain tasks, can be a fascinating challenge to storyboard and master. The book is quite candid about the potential weaknesses of the approach. Which is one of its strengths. It offers a clear eyed study of the potential and pitfalls of current gaming.

Still, if you are able to follow its advice, you can carve out an intricate mesh of a story to entrance your players.

Comprehensive storytelling for game developers

The video game has come into its own in recent decades and Josiah Lebowitz & Chris Klug have put together a wonderful guide for those who are motivated not just by the gameplay and action but the storyline within the game as well. Some games with great stories go along unappreciated . Unlike writing for film, television or for fiction novels, writing for video games is a different beast and Lebowitz & Klug go over them in great detail. In a film, everything is according to the script. In game development, it's subject to change.

The authors go into open-ended and multiple ending stories and the sstrengths and weakenesses of each as well as the considerations of storylines that are based upon the skill level of the gamer. The authors talk about what it is that gamers want and how to develop effective game stories that companies and players want to see. There are many games that are mentioned and with extensive screenshots of example games. I was rather disappointed that Assasin's Creed, which is probably one of the top games with an incredible amount of detail, gameplay, in depth storyline based in history was not mentioned except in the appendix.

This is a completely new area of writing for me, but coming out of Focal Press, it was definitely a title and a method of storytelling that intrigued me. I think this is a definite not-to-miss if someone is considering writing for the game industry. There are tons of resources of various companies and groups that cater to the need of gamers and game development teams

Really fun read!

Story telling in games wasn't something that's always intrigued me. Like many others, I began my gaming career with games like Super Mario, Doom, and Legend of Zelda; all of which had about a line or two of narrative and that was enough for me (heck, that's even more than Pac-Man and Space Invaders right?). It wasn't until a friend of mine brought over a new sort of game, an RPG called Final Fantasy II (which we know today as IV), that I realized games could very well be a medium to tell great stories. Then Final Fantasy XII and Metal Gear Solid came out and removed any doubt, and I've been fascinated with digital story telling ever since.

Which leads me to this book... I didn't order it so I could began writing my own video-game stories (at least not yet), but rather to get a better understanding of the challenges of writing such things, as well as taking an in depth look at some of the story lines in my favorite games. Not only did this book fulfill all those expectations, but also to my surprise was a really fun read! From the start I knew the author was a GAMER and not just some guy out to make a quick buck. All the examples and points he made were just right on. A great example is how disastrous multiple story arcs can be. It's a great idea in theory, and every now and then a game can pull it off (Heavy Rain), but most of the time it's just frustrating as hell (Final Fantasy X2). Also I thought it was neat how much of it I could apply to other, non-video things. For example, there is an entire break down of "the hero's journey", a story framework that's been used since the dawn of time in many novels, that I'm sure I can bust out on my next English paper in school. And for you tabletop RPG Game Masters out there, almost all the material within this book can be applied to your game.

If you're at all into the stories told into games, or need to write one for that matter, I would seriously give this book a read!

Great seller but the biochem author is awful

Not the best biochem book, but the seller was fast and it was an old edition that was super cheap. This book reads like stereo instructions. There are so many better Biochemistry books out there.

Chem major vastly interested in the chemistry of biology - this is the pinacle

Voet and Voet goes synonymous to advanced biochemistry. It is wonderful how he takes you through the course of the book. The detailed examples are simply perfect. He's talking about biological function of Z-DNA, he gives exact details about the conditions and conclusions that let the fact. You would very less likely ask, 'why is that' to the extent of interesting details he goes to.

It is the examples that I think make this book so wholesome.

However, as others have mentioned, the communication could be better. You always have to read twice before you perfectly get to what he says.

Also, it is intended to be a 'professor's' book. He gives so many details that although it all sounds like a fact and worth storing in memory, it isn't. It is hard to classify. Use this book, only if you are very much interested in the details of the subject. To my knowledge, a complete knowledge (as much as you can remember!) of the subject can take you straight to the field of your choice, which I am perfectly sure would not much difficulty learning since there'll not be a vastness that is not mentioned in Voet and Voet.

About the Author
RICHARD POLENBERG is professor of history at Cornell University, where he has received the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award and was appointed Goldwin Smith Professor of American History in 1986. He has been a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and has published widely on twentieth-century American history, including The World of Benjamin Cardozo: Personal Values and the Judicial Process (1997), Fighting Faiths: The Abrams Case, the Supreme Court, and Free Speech (1989), for which he won the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel Award and the Gustavus Myers Foundation's Outstanding Book Award; and One Nation Divisible: Class, Race, and Ethnicity in the United States since 1938 (1980).

Tienkuo

I enjoyed the novel immensely--it's a fun and exciting read. The author gets the big things right--the terrible violence and corruption of the Taipings in their late stages, the disgust of many Westerners for Chinese customs, and the unusual determination and stubbornness it took for those Chinese and Westerners alike who stuck with the Taipings, or in the case of Westerners, those who stayed to pursue a career in China. I trust the typos and minor grammatical problems get corrected for the digital edition--it certainly deserves a really clean copy.

An odyssey in old China

Masterfully interweaving history, culture, and characters, TIENKUO takes readers on a fascinating journey through 19th century China. It was a time of imperialism, trade, drug, and feudal wars. We are introduced to a variety of people caught in the vice of history. The adventures and love of an American missionary's son and an alluring woman named Black Jade are the focal points, but along the way we meet soldiers and mercenaries, warlords and rogues, merchants and nobles. And we are escorted through a little-known, exotic, and compelling time and place.
This book can be read by teenagers, young adults or adults for either entertainment or educational purposes. Students and teachers of Asian studies or Asian-American relations can especially benefit from it. History truly is made of the lives of the many small people caught in its great movements. TIENKUO gives us a delicious taste of a little known time and place and makes history come to life.

Delightfully surprised!

I must admit that I have avoided reading books with an Asian theme, merely because there is too much western culture and history that I have not yet caught up with. I picked up "Tienkuo: The Heavenly Kingdom" almost reluctantly. My hesitation lasted one page before I was swept away with the compelling and engaging story. I was captivated with this adventure from beginning to end. To add to my delight, I came away realizing that I had been given insight into an historical event, so not only was I richly entertained, but I was cleverly educated as well. What more could I ask from a book? My only regret is that Li Bo has not written more. I am certain there are more great tales to tell lurking in the guise of dry historical facts.

An interesting time capsule that takes the "new" out of new media

Rapid technological changes have a way of making new media scholarship obsolete very quickly. At seven years old, this book is well past its usefulness. (In fairness I should have paid more attention to the date of publication before I purchased it.) The book actually serves as an interesting time capsule: remember when iTunes was revolutionary, when HDTVs were crazy expensive, when smart phones were status symbols, when people talked about "postmodernism" and "web 2.0" like they were revolutionary ideas, or when Attack of the Clones was an impressive example of digital film making? (No, I don't remember that last one either.) But the book is of limited use if you want to know about what is "new" in new media past 2007. Also, personally, I did not find the individual articles particularly impressive in their writing, scholarship, or originality—though it's hard to tell if the last two are a product of their age.

This is a great book about a woman building her online business. I like that she is telling her own personal experiences instead of just giving guidelines to follow. It made the book easy to read because her story is really interesting.

Book was easy to read

Book was easy to read. The information was very easy to understand. I would recommend this book to younger adults needing encouragement with venturing out into the world of business. I believe that Ms. Noble did a great job gathering the information that in needed to get started in the world of business. Actually it was along the line of self-help as well. I would recommend it for sure.

Interesting Read With Invaluable Advice * Worth Checking Out!!

Well, I normally do not read these kinds of books but I am trying to start a small business for my hand-crafted jewelry and thought it would be to my benefit to give “Reaching the Peak of Success” a try. Very glad I did! The author held nothing back, sharing all of her trials and tribulations, what she did wrong, and what she did right, and ultimately achieving a very successful business. If there is a chance to learn from another's mistakes, GRAB IT! If you are struggling to start an online business, large or small, this book will most definitely save you time, money, and give you some tried and true advice from someone that has been there, done that; and ended up doing very, very well. And, makes you feel like you can do it too.

“Reaching the Peak of Success” never got boring to me. I read every page and will probably go back and read it again every so often. Fast paced and to the point with so many good tips on everything from selling on eBay and Amazon, to buying containers of product from suppliers in China. I loved the stories of her trips to China to deal with the factory managers. Fascinating! Amanda’s advice for starting a website for your business is absolutely INVALUABLE -- anyone can build a website but it has to be designed TO SELL and she outlines the steps she did – the ones that did not work and what she did that finally worked. What a treasure to find all of this advice in one easy-to-read book! My head is still swimming with ideas sprouted from reading this book. I don’t know if I will have the same determination that the author did (she almost quit a few times) but I’m going to give it a try! I am even considering changing my direction after reading this book.

Amanda, THANK YOU for sharing your story and for inspiring those of us that want to ditch the 9-5 routine to follow our dreams!
